“Independent Candidates”, Supported by Democracy Forces Entered the Parliament

26th July 2007

The general elections in Turkey, which were brought forward because of the crisis in Presidency elections, were held in 22th July.

Because of the 10 percent national threshold, our Party (EMEP) and its allies participated in the elections with “independent candidates”.

The allience of DTP (Democratic Society Party), EMEP (Labour Party), SDP (Socialist Democracy Party), some left-wing groups and organisations, intellectiuals and trade unionists supported 60 independent candidates.

Elections were done under antidemocratic and unequal conditions. While the media propagandised the neoliberal bourgeois parties, they ignored the independent candidates. Also, armed forces prevented the election campaigns of independent candidates. But despite these, 23 independent candidates entered the Parliament. This number is enough to make a group in the Parliament. Our General President Levent Tuzel was also “independent candidate” from Izmir, he got 37 thousand votes but it wasn't enough to enter the Parliament.

After the elections, the three parties those entered the Parliament are: AKP (Justice and Development Party, a liberal party which is collaborator of imperialists) with 340 seats, CHP (Republican People's Party, this party edged towards right gradually, cooperate with putschist generals) wih 112 seats and MHP (Nationalist Movement Party, a fascist party) with 70 seats. All these three parties support the neoliberal economical policies. But AKP follows a moderate Islamic line and the other two follow a nationalist line.

Also an other important point of these elections is the entrance of the “independent candidates” who were supported by Labour, Peace and Democracy Forces. It can be evaluated as an important change at the Parliament. Of course it's important to enter the Parliament again, after 15 deputies of TIP (Workers Party of Turkey) in 1965 and deputies from DEP (Democratic Labour Party) who entered the Parliament 13 years ago and arrested because of taking oath in Kurdish.

The “independent candidates” will have a group in the Parliament and they will defense the human rights such as the democratic solution for Kurdish problem, and the freedom of expression and organisation and the rights of workers and labourers. Also they will struggle with the neoliberal policies of AKP.

Letter of the Party of Labour of Iran (Toufan)

Dear Comrades,

The regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran has intensified the repression and arrest of the worker-activists, women, youths, and of university students. Using the pretext of US imperialists' military threats and of the repeated adoption of the UN resolutions to impose economic sanctions, the capitalist regime of the Islamic Republic has put tremendous pressure on the Iranian masses and is responding to the just demands of the people by bullets and terror. On July 10, Mansour Ossanlou the head of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburb Bus Company (Sherkat e Vahed) was kidnapped by a group (in civilian clothes) related to the Islamic Republic's security forces. According to the reports given by his family, Mansour is now imprisoned in section 209 of notorious Evin prison in Tehran. The infamous Evin prison is known as a torture chamber of the opponents of the Shah and the Sheikh. The life of Mr. Ossanlou is in danger in the prison.

Mr. Ossanlou has fearlessly defended democratic rights of the employees of Sherkt e Vahed Bus Company and has formed an independent union for them. This brave activist has mocked the Islamic Republic's torture and imprisonment. These are Mr. Ossanlou's only guilt!

Mansour Ossanlou is a labour activist who strongly opposes any economic sanction or imperialist military invasion of Iran. For several years, Ossanlou has struggled to achieve the workers' rights, the right to strike, and the right to form organisation. He is respected by the workers and freedom-seeking people of Iran.

Our Party, the Party of Labour of Iran (Toufan), calls on each of the fraternal Marxist-Leninist Parties and Organisations to send protest letters to Iranian Consulates and to take other appropriate actions condemning the kidnapping of Mr. Ossanlou and demanding his immediate and unconditional release. We must demand the immediate release of all imprisoned worker-activists, women, youths, students, and dissidents.

Our Party strongly and resolutely opposes any UN economic sanction or any imperialist-Zionist military action against Iran. We believe that the barbaric and suppressive policies of the Islamic Republic against workers, students, women and the freedom-seeking patriots only serve the interests of imperialists and Zionists. We strongly condemn these policies.

Interview with Francisco Caraballo

From A Verdade, Brazil, January 2004

A Verdade: Why are you in prison?

F.C.: I have been involved in revolutionary activity continuously for 43 years. I participated in the foundation of the Communist Party of Colombia (M-L) and of the Popular Army of Liberation. I have fought consistently for profound transformations in the political and social reality of the country. That is why I took part in various forms of revolutionary activity. As a rebel I have expressed in theory and practice the contradiction with the established social system and the State that defends it. For many years I was subjected to rabid persecution by the State’s repressive apparatus. On several occasions news of my death was published and rewards were offered for capture, dead or alive, in the manner of the Wild West. For 10 years I have been in prison, first in the installations of the Army Artillery School, then in the Military Police Battalion in Bogotá, and finally I was transferred to the Maximum Security Penitentiary in Itagüi-Antioquia. According to the norms of the Penal Code, I have already completed my sentence; however, I have been condemned to 40 years in prison. This shows that the State is violating its own laws and that justice is subordinate to the interests of the struggle between those who defend the status quo and those who seek to change it radically.

A Verdade: Colombia has vast riches, but its people live in misery. What are the causes of the poverty in Colombia?

F.C.: Colombia is inhabited by 44 million people, of whom 67% are less than 30 years old. It has an area of 1,338,000 sq. km. [514,000 sq. mi], with a very varied topography and climate. The agricultural and livestock sectors are the bases of the economy, with coffee as the main export product. It produces a variety of products in all climates and has favorable conditions for raising livestock and fishing, although these have been downplayed in favor of imports. The subsoil contains oil, which makes up 30% of exports, coal, which represents 40% of the reserves of Latin America, natural gas, emeralds, gold, silver, platinum, iron, nickel, uranium and cobalt. Its territory has an important biological heritage. Industry, which contributes 20% of the GNP, produces textiles, food, chemicals and metallurgy among other things.

Despite such a promising reality, while a narrow elite enjoys all the privileges and benefits, the immense majority of Colombians are forced into misery and are marginalized. The oligarchy, tied to big transnational capital, is responsible for the most serious problems of the country, the backwardness and poverty, because those in power have persisted in fulfilling the dictates of the IMF and World Bank, in applying the neo-liberal model and "economic opening" that has reduced agricultural, livestock and industrial production, besides promoting the increased exploitation of labor and the privatization of public enterprises at the cost of the living and working conditions of the workers.

Imperialist domination, the advances in the concentration and centralization of production and capital, the application of neo-liberal policies, the strengthening of the financial sector, have widened the chasm between broad sectors of society and a small group of large capitalists. It is this group which is the most responsible for the backwardness, misery and violence from which the majority of Colombians suffers.

A Verdade: What are the changes that your Party calls for in Colombia?

F.C.: The Communist Party of Colombia Marxist-Leninist proposes, as its strategic objective, the realization of a process of democratic, anti-imperialist revolution oriented towards socialism. Socialist construction is understood as a complex and long task that logically requires fundamental changes in political consciousness, in the correlation of forces confronting each other and in the accumulation of experiences in the various forms of class confrontation. It is necessary to remove the obstacles which are opposed to social progress, to the exercise of a genuine democracy and to the improvement of the conditions of life of the majorities who have been excluded.

On the level of tactics, the Party demands:

  • To struggle for the defense of national sovereignty, to contribute to the unity of the Latin American peoples and to internationalism among the workers; all this has to be seen as related to the mobilizations against the interference of the United States government in the affairs that are only the concern of our people.

  • To reject the neo-liberal policies and, of course, to contribute to defending and improving the conditions of life of the workers.

  • To promote actions for a genuine democracy, the right to life, liberty, dignity and human rights; against State terrorism, paramilitaries and all kinds of repression against the people’s fighters.

  • To promote unity on different social levels, as an indispensable condition to carry out the great transformations that Colombia needs.

All the political or social actions that the Party promotes are oriented towards creating conditions for the changes that conform to the character of the revolution.

A Verdade: Recently the Uribe government suffered a big defeat in the referendum. Why did the Colombian people say No to Uribe and the policies of the IMF?

F.C.: It is useful to remember that after his victory in the presidential elections of 2002, the big media, the most important economic groups and some political and social sectors spread the idea that Colombians unanimously supported all the policies of President Alvaro Uribe, and he certainly believed that. But the majority of Colombians are not in favor of the violence that the State is increasingly using against the people, nor in supporting further intervention of the Bush government in the internal affairs of Colombia, nor do they agree to be subordinated to the demands of the IMF. The Colombian people reject the policy of hunger and repression of the present government. That explains why, after fourteen months in the government, President Uribe has suffered successive failures, including the rejection of the referendum. It was a matter of the militarization of national life and the policy of "democratic security," which has given free reign to all forms of arbitrariness. President Uribe showed his bankruptcy on important matters: he failed to organize a pro-Uribe party and did not receive support for his proposal for presidential reelection, by means of which he intended to prolong his term; he has lost his unanimous support in the big media; he failed to revive the idea of a referendum by means of political maneuvers; he did not receive endorsement for the Special Treaty of Protection for Colombian immigrants in the United States. As consequence of all these factors, the dissatisfaction with and criticism of the main policies of the Uribe government has grown, opening enormous possibilities for the people’s struggles, keeping in mind that this year new measures have been announced that will affect large groups of the population.

A Verdade: What is the Plan Colombia? What is the Andean Regional Initiative?

F.C.: Plan Colombia is part of the strategy of the United States to strengthen its domination in the Americas. This imperialist policy has its precedents in the strategy of the cold war and the doctrine of "national security," which influences determining factors of the reality of Latin America and of Colombia in particular, given its importance from a geopolitical point of view. In December of 1998, President Andres Pastrana presented Plan Colombia under the guise of a "Change to Build Peace," which tried to disguise its true intentions. Initially the emphasis was put, formally, on the fight against drug trafficking, but a year later its military content was made clear, that it was to justify the restructuring, strengthening and modernization of the military forces. Together with these measures, the presence of military troops has increased, and intelligence and technical personnel as well as elite Pentagon troops are operating on Colombian territory. The United States government has reinforced its "air interdiction" and has installed radar at various sites in the country. After September 11, under the guise of the fight against terrorism declared by Mr. Bush, that activity has noticeably increased.

Besides the military element, which is the primary element in their plans, Plan Colombia has other components: on the economic plane it is connected to the interests of important oil companies in the United States and Great Britain to take over the energy resources of the country; they took part in drawing up the documents of the Plan and made huge investments in the protection of these resources through agreements with the paramilitary groups. On the political level, repressive measures have been put in place aimed at striking against the forces opposed to or fighting against the government. Recently the Congress approved the Anti-Terrorist Law, which will undoubtedly increase the arbitrary measures against the population. Today the balance is negative and these are dangerous tendencies not only for Colombia but for the whole region.

It is clear that the United States and the transnational companies have increased their efforts to control the resources of the Andean region, not only in relation to the exploitation of oil. As an example, consider the plan for an inter-oceanic corridor between Tumaco, Manaos and Belem do Para, the plan for an inter-oceanic canal between Atrato and Truando and the control of the Amazon River. Their primary interest is in the control of the Amazon region, which is vital for the future of humanity; it produces 40% of the world’s oxygen supply, contains the greatest biodiversity on the planet and is also a huge source of fresh water. But above all, one must consider the extraordinary oil reserves in this region. For oil is linked with the wars that the United States is carrying out.

The Andean Regional Initiative is the second phase of Plan Colombia. It was initially presented as a strategy for Colombia, but subsequently it was presented in its true dimensions. This shows to a certain extent the reality and objectives of the United States government. What began under the guise of the fight against drug trafficking has been transformed into a fight against the peoples and against those who are opposed to the intervention and domination of the United States in these countries. President Bus h is taking advantage of any pretext for aggression and war. In relation to the military component of Plan Colombia one must remember that President Uribe, as a faithful agent of the United States government, is justifying and supporting Bush’s policies; thus he has said that Colombia’s problem is a common enemy for the democracies of the continent and that the Colombian violent groups have a destabilizing potential for all the democracies in the region.

For us this is a warning of the Pentagon’s intention to convert the military base at Alcántara, in the North East of Brazil, into a center of military operations at the service of the United States; the stationing of U.S. troops at the military base of Manta in Ecuador; the reinforcement of the land, air, and sea points of control in the region; the intention of the Southern Command to involve the states bordering Colombia in its plan for a counter-insurgency war, violating the national sovereignty and the self-determination of the peoples.

In response to the policies that the United States government is applying in Latin America, in the first place it is necessary to unite the forces and struggles of the Latin-American peoples for sovereignty, genuine democracy and human dignity.

A Verdade: The E.P.L. [People’s Liberation Army], E.L.N. [Army of National Liberation] and the F.A.R.C. [Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia] are the main guerrilla forces in Colombia. Is it possible to unite these forces around a program?

F.C.: I think that it is not only possible but indispensable, since it is necessary for the progress of the revolutionary movement. Only by means of unity will there be a greater strength in the forces fighting for the revolutionary transformation of the reality of the country towards a better future for the Colombians. I am convinced that all the organizations wish to advance towards greater levels of unity, keeping in mind that we face the same enemies and we have common strategic objectives, basically oriented by the same ideals. But one must recognize that there is a difference between wishes and practice; that is the truth....

A Verdade: How can you fight for freedom as a prisoner condemned to more than forty years in prison?

F.C.: I think it is possible to fight for freedom, to a greater or lesser degree, whatever the difficulties that one faces. The main thing is the will to do it.... The sentence that the Colombian State has imposed on me is an expression of its revenge; for that reason in my case the State has violated its own norms; in my case, it is not a legal but a political situation; the judges have understood it this way and it has been clear from the moment when they refused to subject me to this farce and I have denounce the immorality of the State and the incapacity of the courts to judge my conduct and my revolutionary activity. Understanding this has helped me face the situation and learn to act in accordance with my circumstances. My main interest has been not to remain on the sidelines of political reality or of my activity as a revolutionary. This requires continuous efforts to overcome the many and permanent obstacles. I am clear that the fight for my freedom is linked to the struggle that is being carried out outside of these bars by large numbers of men and women for their real freedom....

A Verdade: In November we will be commemorating 86 years since the Great Russian Socialist Revolution. In your opinion, is socialism the future of humanity?

F.C.: A Verdade has given me the opportunity to refer to two aspects of this question:

1) The disaster that took place in the Soviet Union was a very important historical fact, which some theoreticians and historians have jubilantly proclaimed as the "end of history," as the final victory of the capitalist system over socialism. In fact, what we have seen is the complete failure of a model of society and State whose decadence was foreseeable, that it has had nothing to do with socialism for a long time. Since before the sixties, when new Marxist-Leninists organizations began to form and the division of the International Communist Movement became evident, the deviations into which the Soviet leaders had fallen were denounced, and the irreversible process of degeneration of the so-called Soviet model, as actually happened, was noted. From the moment when the end of contradictions and of the class struggle was proclaimed; when the "State of the whole people" was established; when the exercise of liberal democracy was affirmed, which drowned genuine democracy with workers’ participation; when a leading clique was installed in State power on the backs of the interests of the people; when impositions and abuses were carried out against the Communist Movement, in contradiction to proletarian internationalism, the road to the decay of the socialist system and the Soviet State was opened. The rest came as a logical consequence and did not take place from one moment to another, but over a prolonged period. The present reality shows the deep crisis of the capitalist system, the aggravation of the economic situation which continues to worsen the situation of the "developing" countries; the deepening of the social problems including more hunger, unemployment, marginalization, etc.; the proliferation of wars and armed conflicts in various regions of the planet.

2) Marxist-Leninist theory, as a scientific theory, continues its relevance, despite those who have tried and are trying to deny it or distort it, which amount to the same thing. I believe without any doubt in Marxism to orient revolutionary actions that transform society; that is to say in Marxism as guide or reference point for our actions, not as a formula or prescription. I am convinced that socialism signals a definite perspective for revolutionary changes in society. Socialism is the future of humanity, without a doubt.

Many thanks.

Francisco Caraballo

ICMLPO: All together against the G-8 Summit, Hail the international solidarity

All together against the G-8 Summit,
Hail the international solidarity

The leaders of the eight big powers meet in Heiligendamm, in Northern Germany, under very heavy police protection.
They intend to dictat their law and impose the interests of the imperialit powers to all the planet, against the workers, the toilers, the peasants and the peoples of the world.
They speak of reducing the pollution, but its them, the representatives of the monopoles that pollute.
They pretend to reduce powerty, but its them who organize the plundering of the richnesses of the dependant countries and that make their profit of the debt.
They speak of peace, but its them who militarise the planet, launch the wars for a new division of the markets and the spheres of influence, and agress the peoples and the countries, like Iraq, Afghanistan and, tomorrow, Iran.
The speak of democracy but put in place everywhere police-states which criminalise all kinds of protest against the neoliberal order.
With all the organisations who denounce this summit of the exploiters, the pluderers of wealth, the fosters of wars, we struggle for the immediate cancelling of the debt of the Third World countries.
We denounce and combat everywhere the neoliberal policies.
We claim for the development of the solidarity between workers and peoples all over the world and for reinforce the struggle againts imperialism and ist neoliberal policy.

Yes, another world is possible and all the most necessary
The alternative is socialism

Editorial of En Marcha Resounding: Victory of the People and the Left in Equador

Resounding Victory of the People and the Left

Editorial of the weekly En Marcha, number 1355, organ of the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Ecuador

The victory of the YES was crushing; 78% of Ecuadorians expressed their desire for change by opening the way to calling the National Constituent Assembly, which will now become the objective over which the various popular and political organizations will act.

Together with this victory of the workers and peoples of Ecuador, of the parties of the left and other emocratic and progressive forces that waged the campaign in favor of the Yes, came the defeat of the right represented by the Christian Democratic Union, the Christian Social Party, Patriotic Society and the PRIAN, by the Chambers of Commerce and big communications media such as Teleamazonas, Telecentro, Gamavision, El Comercio and El Universo, who waged a widespread and aggressive anti-communist campaign. The right hoped at least, to win 20 to 25% of the votes in favor of the NO, in order to claim "victory" to minimize the legitimacy of calling the Constituent Assembly. Now, they cynically claim that they do not feel defeated and that they are part of the forces interested in change.

The people voted to put end to a Constitution that makes neo-liberalism the official "model of development"; but as soon as the results were known, the right said that it was necessary to reach a consensus among all the social and political sectors of the country to draft a Constitution that will take into account everyone's opinions, that is, that maintains the conceptions and juridical scaffold that defends the economic and political interests of the bourgeoisie and imperialism.

There can be no agreement or consensus with the bourgeoisie and the representatives of imperialism; the people have fought for change and now want the Constituent Assembly to draw up a political Charter that will create the conditions that will introduce profound transformations in Ecuador. Of course, for this to occur, the left-wing, progressive and democratic forces should form the majority representation in the Constituent Assembly and block the road to the right wing that also wants to have its representatives in the Assembly. The structure of unity lists, that will unite representatives of the movements, parties and organizations of the tendency that is fighting for social change, is fundamental. It would be a serious error if, with the crushing victory of the Yes, exclusivist positions would arise that underestimate the importance and force of unity, and that would fragment those who should march and act in unity in the next electoral contest and in the Assembly itself. We must face the right-wing united, and not think that the defeat they have now suffered means their final burial.

Statement of The Party of Labour of Iran (Toufan) about the USA's Plans on the Middle East

Stop the War!
No Sanctions, No Bombs Against Iran!
March 17, 2007

The US has, directly after its occupation of Iraq, been building up several military bases close to the Iranian border.

The US has made repeated demands on the Iranian government to accommodate to US policies concerning the "new American order". Replacement of the regimes in Iraq, North Korea and Iran is, and has been, part of the Bush doctrine. Right now, as the US has failed in Iraq, its war-mongering against Iran is on the increase. The US has now dispatched two aircraft carriers to the Gulf of Persia and placed 50 warships just off the Iranian coast. The US accuses Iran of possessing nuclear arms or of aiming at producing them. This is the hysterical US propaganda against Iran, in spite of the fact that all inspectors have declared that Iran has got no nuclear arms; those statements, however, don’t suffice for G.W. Bush. According to what the US dictates, independent nations have no right to develop peaceful nuclear power for civil use. The US dictate does not concern Israel, which is a nuclear power in the Middle East. Nor does it apply to Pakistan, or India, et al. What is being said,!
is that the Tehran regime must obey the US on the Palestine/Israel conflict; must not oppose US policies in the Persian Gulf on matters concerning oil; must accommodate entirely to the IMF and the World Bank, etc. In short, Iran must unconditionally align itself with the US in the rivalry of the latter with the EU, Japan, and China. Can this be realized without any military intervention? Yes, that alternative might be possible. The capitalist clergy regime in Tehran has the character of selling out to the US for the sake of power. All factions within the Tehran regime have shown marked tendencies of compromise with the US. Examples of this are that the Islamic regime, during bombardments of Iraq and Afghanistan, has been collaborating with "the alliance Britain-US" and, according to its own statement, "the US wouldn’t succeed in Iraq and Afghanistan without help from Iran".

Iran was one of the first states to recognize the stooge regime in Baghdad. The Tehran regime has from the very beginning been acting against the resistance movement in Iraq, and has been close to the US line, while yet being accused of responsibility for the US failure in Iraq.

An invasion of Iran is, given the situation of huge US problems in Iraq and internationally, unlikely to occur. Nevertheless, the war-mongering is dangerously similar to the war-mongering that preceded the invasion of Iraq. If it is not possible, in the end, to change the Iranian regime in favour of US desires, it might finally lead to a military action against Iran. The US doesn’t care about the form or medieval character of the Iranian regime. History has shown that the US may collaborate with any kind of Satan to realize its aims and goals. Decisive to the Bush administration is that Iran chooses a pro-US line like Kuwait, Bahrain, Turkey, Qatar et al. The possible intrusion of US imperialism into Iran is of the same nature as its intrusion into Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia and other countries, and must be condemned. The US has its imperialist political, economical and strategic interests, and no thinking person should believe that US meddling into Iranian affairs has !
anything to do with democracy, freedom or justice. That is nothing but sheer imperialist propaganda. The people of Iran can, by its own might, overthrow the reactionary theocratic regime and build a free and democratic society without the "aid" of imperialism. Iranians are never going to forget the 1953 event, when Prime Minister Mosadegh was overthrown by a joint US-British action following his nationalization of the oil industry. The Shah was reinstated, oppression and terror became everyday features, and the democracy movement was drowned in blood. One should not be blinded by the terror regime in Iran to forget about the colonial and barbaric aims of US imperialism.

US Out of Iraq Immediately and Unconditionally!
No Sanctions, No Bombs Against Iran!

Tunisia: Attacks against Hamma Hammami and Radhia Nasraoui

Official statement of the Communist Party of the Workers of Tunisia (PCOT)

Tunisia: Attacks against Hamma Hammami and Radhia Nasraoui

The Communist Party of the Workers of Tunisia denounces the fact that its spokesperson Hamma Hammami and his wife, the lawyer and member of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, Radhia Nasraoui, have been subjected to harsh surveillance and to being followed by the political police. And not only Radhia, but her office is subjected to surveillance 24 hours a day by detachments of the political police. The lawyer is followed everywhere and, just as Hamma, is subjected to all kinds of intimidation.

Last March 13, Hamma Hammami was attacked in the middle of Tunis, at 6:15 PM by a group of high police officers who struck her brutally. This took place near the office of other lawyers, to whom Hamma went to denounce the persecution of which he was the victim. The police surrounded the office of that lawyer, Mokhtar Trifi, to prevent anyone from entering. The physical attack on Hamma stopped when a large group came to his defense and prevented the police from continuing to mistreat him.

In the "democratic" Tunisia of President Ali, the friend of Chirac, Aznar, Bush, etc., the political police play a sinister role. One should recall that both Hamma Hammami and his companion Radhia have been imprisoned on various occasions and attacked physically.

Forward with our total solidarity with Hamma and Radhia, as well as our most energetic protest against the tyrannical regime of the Ali Government.

Article to Roter Morgen 1/2007 about student's struggle

In its 1/2007 issue the german newspaper "ROTER MORGEN", published by KPD, hosts an article for the "Movement for the Reorganisation of KKE 1918-55". The article, in German, is available here. We give you an english translation of the biggest part of the article.

The reactionary Karamanlis’s government has started the most vicious attack in youth’s rights and the public and free education the last decade. It’s specific aims for the that period is the Article 16 of the Greek Constitution that previsions the public nature of higher education and the Universities asylum.

The social-democratic party (PASOK) for many years was declaring that it was against any revision of Article 16 but last year George Papandreou, PASOK's leader declared his agreement for the foundation of private Universities despite the large reactions in his party.

PASOK’s agreement for the revision was vital because revising a Constitution’s article needs positive vote the 2/3 of the Parliamentary members (180 PM) and the monarch-fascist party of New Democracy has 164. In the case that the positive votes are less than 150 the revision is fully cancelled and in the case that they are between 150 and 180 the revision is carried for the next government and needs again 180 positive votes.

The reactions triggered by this move are running high. The first round of mobilizations was before summer and ended with the teachers making strike for 6 weeks (the largest strikes the last 15 years), thousands of secondary schools and the 90% of the University departments under occupation. This force the government to cancel the discussion about the Universities asylum for an unknown time in the future.

The new year started with the discussion for the revision of Article 16 of the Constitution. Protest rallies from teachers, students, pupils and academics were held in all major cities throughout the country. Right now 300 University departments are under occupation. Thousands of students and academics participate in the mobilizations that take place every week in all the Greek major cities.

The struggle of academics, high school and primary school teachers with the last years' STRIKES and the massive University-high school OCCUPATIONS showed that with massive struggle the plans of the capitalists can be cancelled. ATHENS (with the mass pan-hellenic big strike on 1999) and PARIS show the only right way: UNITY - MASSIVITY - VICTORY.

From the first moment the Movement for the Reorganisation of the KKE 1918-55 underlined the necessity of a forehead of academic - professors - schoolteachers and a wider coiling round the education organisations with simultaneously mass LONG-TERM OCCUPATIONS of students and pupils with central objectives: DEFENCE of academic ASYLUM of - PUBLIC FREE EDUCATION - ARTICLE 16. This frame is only that can ensure fighting UNITY and big MASSIVITY, completely essential conditions for the rejection of attack and the victorious result of fight. The Movement supported the mobilizations of POSDEP (The Federation of University Professors) - OLME – DOE and participates in the “Pan-hellenic initiative for article 16” which was created on January.

It’s obvious that any energies in juxtaposition with this frame of fight are disruptive because they undermine immediately from the start the UNITY, they cancel inevitably the MASSIVITY, they render beforehand INEFFECTIVE the fight and they prejudge with mathematic precision his failure, they are included beforehand in government's disruptive tactics and they facilitate its plans “to pass” reagents metres for the education.

During all this months of reactions the reformists of the so-called “C”PG organized disruptive separate concentrations, didn’t publish photos of the vicious police attacks against the strikers in their newspaper, they were against long term University occupations and they did everything possible to make the reactions lighter. Their actions are completely aligned with government's tactics in the frames of permanent reactionary collaboration "C"PG-New Democracy.

The big reactions forced PASOK in a manoeuvre. Suddenly during the Parliament’s discussion about the Constitution’s revision it called for censure motion and declared that is not wishing to participate in the revision anymore. The practical fall back of the leadership of PASOK results from the strong pan-hellenic movement that disputes the market's dictatorship and defended public university with passion and sobriety. It was the first victory for Greek education movement.

The reactionary collaboration "C"PG-New Democracy was revealed once again when A. Papariga, leader of the so-called “C”PG, during the 3-day debate for the censure motion, spoke first from all the party leaders and called the censure motion a “wash-out” winning the warm applauses from the parliamentary members of the monarch-facist party of N.D. Finally “C”PG MPs instead of voting for the motion they abstained.

Now it’s vital that the reactions commence so the government fully cancels any thoughts for privatising the public education and cancelling the asylum. Already POSDEP will proceed with rolling five-day strikes and new rallies are already in the schedule.

Announcement of the academics' Union

UNION OF TEACHING AND SCIENTIFIC PERSONNEL IN ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Union of Teaching and Scientific Personnel of AUTH, given the unjustifiable massive and brutal arrests of dozens of students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, that had been peacefully demonstrating against the legislation reforms in the Highest Education Level, taking part in the education demonstration of Thursday 8-3-2007 in Athens following their student unions' decisions,
  • expresses the solidarity of the academic professors of our University towards their struggling students and especially towards the arrestees, a lot of whom are first year pre-graduate students,
  • protests strongly against the provocative and bloody suppression of the struggles of the student and the university-wide movement as a choice for applying the governmental policy for the Higher Education,
  • expresses their firm opposition to the infringement of the constitutional and juridical rights of the arrestees, who have been deprived from having a contact with their lawyers and their family for more than 24 hours.
  • strictly denounces the plans and the tactics for taking advantage of the so-called masqueteers by the security forces, who aim to defame and degrade the University and Student movement in the social conscience.
  • firmly protests against the penalisation of the democratic and critical right of every citizen to freely demonstrate their opposition to the governmental choices; and against the extremely having charges of "anti-terrorist" kind, for "constituting a gang", which have been falsified by every recent witness and record.
The Union believes that the arrested students, whom we, professors, know in person in the classrooms and the amphitheatres, have nothing to do with the accusations, as neither do they wear any masks, or are "gangsters" by taking part in the democratic procedures of their student unions.

Norwegian communists will reorganize

Our Movement today recieved the following message from the Marxist-Leninist group Revolution of Norway:

Today, on 10 March 2007, the old Maoist party of Norway (AKP) will dissolve itself and merge into a new "broad" party of left Social Democratic character.

Some comrades from the communist opposition within the AKP and from the party's student's league, NKS, together with comrades from Revolusjon, have initiated "Communist Platform". Our ambition is to start a process of struggle and unification, as necessary steps on the road towards re-establishing a Marxist-Leninist Communist Party in our country.

The "Communist Platform" has its own web page

First victory for free public education - We continue the fight

Bulletin of the pan-hellenic initiative for article 16

First victory for free public education
We continue the fight

What was considered impossible until a few days ago, finally happened. The revision of the constitution's article 16 cannot take place, without 180 votes in the parliament's assembly. The practical fall back of the leadership of PASOK (which the party of the opposition -"socialistic", and which actually still supports "private" universities) results from the strong pan-hellenic movement that disputes the market's dictatorship and defended public university with passion and sobriety. Against the alliance between the (right wing) government and the leadership of PASOK, against the libelography on behalf of a big part of the press, against the violence of the police, and the alliance of 1,000 people willing to support the government in its most difficult moment, not only did the movement remained upright, but also managed to unfold moch more beyond the academic community. More than 330 university faculties have been occupied, strikes of POSDEP, committees were organized all over Greece, sending the message that EDUCATION IS NOT A MERCHANDISE!

The pan-hellenic initiative for article 16 (http://www.arthro16.gr) greets this first victory of the movement from the academic community and the people. But we should not rely on this. This is the beginning and the route is open!

Against the reactionary revision of Article 16 of the Constitution

Last Wednesday begun the Parliamentary debate on the revision of Article 16 of the Constitution that previsions the public nature of higher education. The new attack to the right of free education for all for the reactionary government of the monarch-fascist New Democracy with the aid of George Papandreou, PASOK's leader, is the most vicious attack in public education the last years and is joined with the attempt to cancel the Universities asylum.

The reactions triggered by this move are running high. Protest rallies from teachers, students, pupils and academics were held in all major cities throughout the country, while teachers went on a 24-hour strike and civil servants realized a 4-hours stoppage of work. Over 250 University departments are under occupation. Thousands of students participated in the mobilizations that took place in the morning.

In this direction is completely essential the constitution of a forehead of academic - professors - schoolteachers and a wider coiling round the education organisations with simultaneously mass OCCUPATIONS of students and pupils with central objectives: DEFENCE of academic ASYLUM of - PUBLIC FREE EDUCATION - ARTICLE 16, only that can ensure fighting UNIT and big MASSIVITY, completely essential conditions for the rejection of attack and the victorious result of fight. POSDEP - OLME - DOE are imposed moreover practise the bigger possible pressure in the reformists leaders of ADEDY and the NATIONAL WORKERS' UNION OF GREECE for support in their fight.

Any energies in juxtaposition with this frame of fight are disruptive because they undermine immediately from the start the UNIT, they cancel inevitably the MASSIVITY, they render beforehand INEFFECTIVE the fight and they prejudge with mathematic precision his failure, they are included beforehand in government's disruptive tactics and they facilitate its plans “to pass” reagents metres for the education. In the same direction the disruptive separate concentrations of his reformists of "C"PG that is completely aligned with government's tactics in the frames of permanent reactonary collaboration "C"PG-New Democracy.

ICMLPO: Resolution on the Situation in the Middle East

* This article translated in Greek is available on issue 243 of Anasintaxi.

The International Conference of Marxist-Leninist Parties and Organizations (ICMLPO), meeting in Brazil, at its XIIth Plenary Session, has examined the situation in the Middle East. In the first place, the participants greet the International Conference of Solidarity with the People of Lebanon and other peoples of the region, a conference which is held in Lebanon.

The ICMLPO has particularly examined the following points:

1. U.S. imperialism which, together with its English ally, has been occupying Iraq since 2003, is continuing to massacre the civilian populations, is practicing torture on a grand scale, is murdering, imprisoning, and forcing into exile the Iraqi elites, promoting communal and ethnic rivalries to divide the country, is sinking the popular masses into misery and ignorance, and is systematically looting the oil wealth of the country. Faced with this imperialist barbarism, the Iraqi people, counting on the solidarity and sympathy of the workers, peoples, revolutionaries and progressive people of the world, is waging a tenacious armed resistance that has dealt the occupiers political and military disasters, to the extent that it has been forced to speak of a "new Vietnam", while seeking a way out of the Iraqi hell.

2. The Zionist State of Israel, with the blatant support of U.S. imperialism and the European imperialists, as well as with the tacit or open collaboration of the reactionary Arab states, is continuing to massacre the Palestinian people in Gaza and in the West bank, creating a famine by blocking the arrival of international aid, is murdering, kidnapping and imprisoning its leaders, destroying their homes and infrastructure, expelling thousands of families, "Judaizing" their land and places of worship to subject this martyred people and impose on them the imperialist-Zionist plans that deny them their national rights.

In reaction to these policies of extermination, the Palestinian people are continuing their resistance and struggle to recover their land, to achieve their independence and to build a future with dignity, peace, democracy and progress. The Palestinian cause demands the ever increasing support of the peoples and the freedom-loving forces.

3. Last summer, the Zionist State, with the direct support of the Bush government and the majority of the governments of the European Union and the collaboration of the reactionary Arab states, declared a savage war against Lebanon. Entire towns were destroyed, civilian populations were massacred or forced into exile. The majority of the economic and civilian infrastructure was destroyed. In that aggression, prohibited weapons were used. The brave Lebanese people and their armed resistance, counting on the solidarity and sympathy of the peoples and the anti-imperialist forces of the world, inflicted a defeat on the Zionist army that has restored confidence to the Arab peoples of the whole region in their potential and their ability to win.

4. Since 2001, Afghanistan has been under the military occupation of the U.S. imperialists and their allies. This occupation has brought chaos, lack of security and misery to the country. The armies of occupation do not bother to conceal the massacres that they are committing in the name of the "war on terrorism". The Afghan people are continually showing their rejection of the occupation. The armed resistance is developing and intensifying from day to day to expel the occupying forces. U.S. imperialism and its allies have been threatening Iran and Syria for months, in order to subject those countries to their imperialist dictates.

The ICMLPO, in consideration of all these facts, energetically condemns the imperialist actions against the Arab peoples and the peoples of the Middle East in general.

It denounces the hypocritical nature of the pretexts invoked to justify themselves, such as the "war on terrorism" or the "proliferation of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction", the "defense of democracy and human rights", etc.., and condemns the racist, hateful and ideological cover for those wars and aggressions, as if these were a "clash of civilizations" or a "war between religions".

It points out that the real objectives of U.S. imperialism and its European and Zionist allies, are nothing more than to install their total domination in this strategic area rich in petroleum. The goal of the Bush government is to create a "Great Middle East" and a "New Middle East" in order to establish domination of the region.

It reiterates its support to the peoples of the Middle East and the armed resistance which are confronting the imperialist and Zionist aggressors. The ICMLPO considers that the struggle of these peoples is an integral part of the struggle of the workers and peoples against imperialism. The result of these struggles directly concerns the peoples, because every weakening of imperialism, headed by U.S. imperialism, reinforces the struggle in ones own country and internationally. Thus, the Arab peoples and the peoples of the region in question should not mistake the nature of their struggle, which is not religious or racial, but anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist. The workers and peoples of the other countries are their allies, regardless of their religion, race or culture, even in the aggressor countries, where thousands and thousands have come out into the street to protest against the imperialist war.

The ICMLPO calls on the workers, peoples, progressives and revolutionaries of the world, to support ever more actively the struggle of the peoples of the Middle East for their national independence. The workers of the imperialist countries have the duty to fight against their governments and to demand the withdrawal of their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to withdraw their support from the Zionist, racist and criminal State of Israel.

The ICMLPO also supports every international attempt to put an end to the impunity of the assassins of the peoples and to demand that the imperialist and Zionist leaders be judged for crimes against humanity committed in Iraq, Palestinian, Lebanon and Afghanistan.
