XXI International Anti-Imperialist and Anti-Fascist Youth Camp

The XXI International Anti-Imperialist and Anti-Fascist Youth Camp (IAIFYC) will take place from July 24 to August 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event will be held at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and will host political debates, workshops, lectures and cultural activities that will be part of the program of the camp.

The camp, which is held every two years, is organized by the International Preparatory Committee (IPC), which is made up of youth organizations of various countries. The Union of Rebel Youth (UJR) is the Brazilian organization that is part of the IPC, and has the main responsibility for the 21st celebration of the event.

Held since the end of the Second World War, the XXI International Anti-Imperialist and Anti-Fascist Youth Camp has become an important centre of debate on the actions of imperialism and fascism in the world and a vehicle for mobilizing international youth around the struggle for their rights, awakening internationalist feelings and contributing to the builing of socialism. The international camp takes place in countries of Latin America and Europe alternately. The 20th celebration took place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Preparation for the IAIAFYC in Brazil

The IAIAFYC is already mobilizing delegations from 20 countries in addition to preparatory committees in 12 Brazilian states. The committees are open to all anti-imperialist and anti-fascist youth and involve debates and political activities in the states. Registration for delegations who want to present workshops and cultural activities in the camp is open.

Participants should bring camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc.), light jackets and clothes that protect against the rain.

Greece gripped by pensions strike

BBC NEWS

Greece gripped by pensions strike
An elderly man looks at a pile of uncollected rubbish caused by a municipal workers' strike in Athens, 18 March, 2008
A two-week refuse collectors' strike has left piles of rubbish on streets

Greece's civil servants are staging a nationwide strike against planned pension reforms, badly disrupting transport and closing public offices.

Trade unions say millions of people are taking part in the 24-hour action, which they describe as the biggest protest so far against the plan.

Greece's parliament is due to vote on a controversial reform bill on Thursday.

It would eliminate most early retirement schemes, merge pension funds and cap auxiliary pensions.

The action is the country's third general strike against the proposed reforms in as many months, and follows a wave of stoppages by workers from various sectors:

  • an ongoing two-week refuse collectors' strike has left piles of uncollected rubbish rotting on streets
  • protest action by power sector workers has caused nationwide blackouts
  • a public transport strike on Tuesday created traffic chaos in the capital Athens.

'Total participation'

Wednesday's strike is paralysing train and bus services across Greece and confined ships to ports.

map

A number of domestic and international flights were reportedly cancelled, as air traffic controllers also joined the action.

Schools, ministries and banks were closed for the day.

"The participation in the strike is total. We are talking about millions," Spyros Papaspyros, who heads the civil servants' umbrella union Adedy, told Reuters news agency.

In Athens, thousands of people took part in a protest rally, and demonstrations were held in several other cities.

Trade union leaders say the protests could be the largest public gathering in Greece since democracy was restored in 1974.

The government has so far made no comment on the turnout.

"The [pension] law harms all categories of workers, mainly young people entering the workforce who will not have rights," Yiannis Panagopoulos, one of the labour union leaders, told the Associated Press news agency.

"And of course it dramatically reduces pensions for everyone," he added.

Government confident

Re-elected last September, the conservative government of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis wants to overhaul Greece's debt-ridden pension system.

It has warned the system faces collapse unless sweeping reforms are implemented.

Under the proposed scheme, more than 100 social security and pension funds will be merged into a handful of funds, cutting administration costs.

The government is also considering raising the retirement age in some sectors, and giving incentives to those who continue working after the retirement age, which currently stands at 65 for men and 60 for women.

The conservatives may only have a majority of two in the 300-seat parliament, but they are confident they will maintain sufficient discipline to pass the legislation, the BBC's Malcolm Brabant in Athens says.

Mr Karamanlis has been in power for four years. Pension reform was one of his main pre-election commitments.

If he fails to push the changes through Parliament, the credibility of his administration will be critically affected, our correspondent says.

Despite the inconveniences, it seems that most Greeks support the strikers.

A survey by the banking unions showed that 71% of the population opposes the pension reforms and 69% supports the strike.

Pensions strike brings Greece to standstill

Pensions strike brings Greece to standstill

Public services were paralysed and dozens of flights cancelled in Greece today as workers took part in a nationwide general strike over government plans to reform the country's debt-ridden pension scheme.

Thousands of people gathered for a mass rally in Athens after walking out of their workplaces in the third strike since December.

Since winning re-election in September, Greece's conservative government has pushed to change the pension system, warning it could soon collapse if it is not overhauled.

Parliament is due to vote on the draft reforms tomorrow. The proposed changes would raise the effective retirement age for women and unify more than 100 pension health funds. Unions say the reforms limit workers' benefits without improving the system.

"The government must not underestimate this public outrage," said Spyros Papaspyros, one of the strike organisers at the civil servants' union Adedy.

Hospital doctors, air traffic controllers, bakers, teachers, journalists and hotel employees joined thousands of rail workers who took part in a 24-hour strike yesterday, bringing the country's transport system to a standstill. Banks and law courts were also shut.

Litter piled up on the streets as waste collectors continued to strike. Meanwhile, a shortage of employees at Greece's main power company has caused rolling blackouts for the past two weeks.

Yiannis Panagopoulos, the head of the GSEE union, claimed "millions" of people were expected to join the protests.

He said the unions would continue to resist the pension reforms even if they were voted into law.

"The battle doesn't stop with the vote on the legislation," Panagopoulos said. "The legislation needs to be implemented when it becomes law. And there resistance will reach its climax."

Court demand for the closure of Justice and Development Party (AKP) is a “life buoy” for it

Chief Public Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya has filed a court request for the closure of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and demanded a five year ban on political activities for President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. So, we can say that, “while there are mechanisms like these, there is no need for coup d’etat”. After memorandums of General Staff and media wars, now Supreme Court is stepped in.

Power wars between bourgeois cliques, which we call as ruling power centres, are continuing by rising a new stage. Contra and special war policies, which has already become a ruling method of Turkish obscurantism, now want to chasten AKP by this threat. But in fact such an opposition style is just a “life buoy” for the government as it has been before.

The reason was shown as "being the focal point of anti-secular activities". It’s clear that AKP is not a secular party; but are those, who accuse AKP of this, and the republic they claim to defend really secular, or to what extent? High Court of Appeals of Turkey doesn’t have an objection to the Presidency of Religious Affairs and such a foundation could be under the egis of the constitutional guarantee in a “secular Republic”!

Once again we see that each power centre in Turkey has its own “democracy definition”. Lately, Prime Minister Erdogan was declaring the protests of workers and labourers against the liquidation of the social security as “illegal”, today he can talk about democracy and “intervention to the will of the people” because of the court request.

As AKP, its managers and collaborator capitalist class which this party represents are not secular they are also betraying Turkey. Millions of workers and labourers taken action against “social security” draft bill saw the real face of the AKP. And the people will send AKP to the trash of history; not the courts. But, via closure court the power centres against AKP show it as aggrieved and sustain it once more and sacrifice the people to the “Deception and Dilution Policies”.

The real owners of our country and democracy and labour forces will not respect the power games of these enemies of the peoples and will manage to unmask them.

PCOF: February 17, Kosovo’s Parliament Proclaimed Independence

The population of Pristina celebrated what it believes to be independence, waving Albanian and U.S. flags. The Serbian populations of Kosovo refuse to be separated from Serbia, whose leaders immediately condemned the secession of this province, which they consider an integral part of Serbia. Tension is rising, threatening to unleash a new Balkan war.

The proclamation of the independence of Kosovo, which Bush calls one of his wishes for years, is the culmination of the process of disintegration of former Yugoslavia.

This process has been encouraged from beginning to end by the Western imperialist powers, in the first place by U.S. imperialism, which wanted to get rid of traces of the Eastern bloc and to weaken, even to eliminate Russia’s influence.

In seventeen years of wars, “ethnic cleansing,” “humanitarian interference,” intense bombardments (78 days of bombing Serbia) and “surgical strikes” causing dozens of “collateral victims,” the imperialist powers have redrawn the borders. They have continued to inflame nationalisms, which were already acute, in order to push the troops of their local allies into forming totally dependent mini-states. All democratic solutions respecting the rights of nations, nationalities and national minorities have been systematically torpedoed by bombs and nationalist manipulations.

U.S. imperialism has formed new bases, militarizing the strategic region of the Balkans. Tens of thousands of NATO soldiers as well as some 2,000 French soldiers have been deployed there.

Most of the governments of the EU and that of the U.S. immediately recognized the independence of Kosovo, where the unemployment rate has reached record highs and where the population lives partly from the money from the Kosovo diaspora. The subsoil whets the appetite of the mining monopolies and the supporters of EU neo-liberalism, such as Kouchner, are salivating at the integration of Kosovo, even Serbia, into the EU of social dumping, free and fair competition, privatizations and the yoke of the “convergence criteria.”

In these conditions, the independence of Kosovo is not good news for the peoples of the Balkans, for it is a new bridgehead of imperialism, in the first place of U.S. imperialism, which is pursuing its policy of destabilization to maintain its hegemony.

In rushing to recognize this independence, Sarkozy is further engaging our country in the politics of destabilization and wars of U.S. imperialism.

EMEP: Military-armed way is no solution. This reality should be accepted

Military-armed way is no solution. This reality should be accepted
03.3.2008
Ending of cross-border operation lasting for eight days all of a sudden and returning was not welcomed by media and provocative circles yelling with desire of war. Media Pashas acclaiming blood and terror during the operation have been investigating if USA has insisted on this sudden comeback and Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) has reached its goals totally. And also they keep on not reflecting the voices of the ones who ask for peace and political solution.

Namely they prefer to talk about the details and absurdity of politics implemented over impossibility. The answer of Turkish Army Generals and Prime Minister to demands for peace and political solution is in the direction of parry. It is once more clear that the government has no plans or no proposition except what the soldiers say. On this issue Prime Minister, claiming that he represents the Kurdish and agrees with Generals, has already handed over the bonds named “authority” to Generals and the forces such as USA.

Now we, demanding democracy and freedom and the real owners and representatives of this country, should ask: What have military operation and military ways solved up to now? What has been gained via military operation aside from deaths, hopeless, enmity, serrility and frustration. Is what they introduce as success to bomb mountains and death of 24 soldiers, 3 guards and PKK members?

Will peace at home and peace in the world be built up through such a policy? Is it possible for peoples to live in peace under the guidance of USA, whose existence is a threat for humanity? Here there is nothing in favour of Turkey, peoples in the region, peace and fraternity. Oppression and ignoring the Kurdish’s existence up to now disclosed that the policy not recognising the existence of the Kurdish in our country based on the equal rights had already fallen down.

Government and military authorities should apologise to peoples in our country and in the region and to the families of the people who died because of them. They should act openly taking into account how to gain the confidence of the Kurdish who are in the demand of a peaceful life together. After all it is possible to draw a promising conclusion from all these badnesses. However to be able to achieve this it is necessary to settle an account with falsities in a brave way and to reinforce people with peace and hope messages, not with blood.

We say once again that firstly a foresight and a dialogue relying on the people is needed. The people of this country will certainly manage to live together in peace.

Freedom and democracy can not be reduced to headscarf

18.2.2008

Parliament voted to amend the constitution to lift the ban on Islamic headscarves at Turkey’s universities with the votes of AKP (Justice and Development Party) and MHP (Nationalist Action Party) deputies. And this constitutional change presented as a necessity for democracy and freedom.

But we know that both two parties and the main opposition, CHP (Republican People’s Party) are all against the democratic rights of workers and Kurdish people in Turkey.

Ignoring some other fundamental problems and reducing the freedom and democracy demands to only headscarf ban shows that these parties are real fakers, not democrats.

While the Government and Army insist on the military solution for Kurdish problem instead of a democratic solution, latitude of thought and expression are trampled by the laws like Article 301, religion classes are compulsory at schools and workers’ unionising is banned by laws AKP and MHP just gain nothing but ridicule by making freedom and democracy show with headscarf.

EMEP’s thought of freedom is not same with the Prime Minister Erdogan’s thought as “demanding education in mother tongue for Turks in Germany while banning Kurds even talking in their mother tongue in Turkey”. EMEP supports the freedoms in all fields including headscarf and dress liberty and struggles for establishing a democratic Turkey. But, EMEP esteems awaking the peoples to not believe this “freedom” and “democracy” game, as a duty.

Headscarf is not the only forbidden subject in Turkey. Moreover, it doesn’t have the highest priority among the bans. Freedom and democracy problem can not be reduced to “the freedom for headscarf”.

Definitely, dressing must be free and nobody must be under pressure because of wearing or not wearing headscarves. But this doesn’t mean that headscarf and democracy has the same meaning. Headscarf is used as a political sign aiming exploitation of religion. Apart from being a freedom issue, it’s a feudal pressure item forcing woman to be veiled. Awaking the peoples of Turkey on this subject is also EMEP’s duty.

Necessity for political freedom and democracy of peoples in Turkey is indubitable. EMEP continues struggling for achieving the democracy and freedoms.

All the working people united in the GSEE-ADEDY strike

The large and without precedent massive strike on the 12th of December 2007 was a decisive response from the working people to the anti-labor plans of the reactionary Karamanlis government concerning the Insurance System. This happened in spite of the desperate effort made by Karamanlis-Papariga to undermine the massiveness of the strike through the separate strikebreaking rally of the PAME reformists; a separate rally that was obviously at the service of the government's plans for Insurance System.

The government of the monarch-fascist party of “New Democracy” started the attack against the public character of the social insurance and the pension funds. The government plans include the extension of the retirement age limits, the slashing of the already low pensions and the further reductions of the contributions from the employers

Those grand panhellenic striking rallies resulted in the ousting of the V. Maginas, the Employment Minister at that time, and his replacement by a new minister, F.P. Petralia.

The new panhellenic strike, called by the reformist leaders of GSEE-ADEDY for the 13th of February, was a continuation of the previous one. The working people, united and en masse, took part in the new strike knowing that only in this way they can repel the anti-insurance plans of the Karamanlis government

The government facing serious problems, during this period, because of the scandals and being unable to deal with the fighting strike rests its hopes on A. Papariga and the PAME reformist leaders who, once again, rushed to support their ally, K. Karamanlis, by organizing yet another strikebreaking and divisive rally. The choice of Omonia Square this time, instead of National Resistance Square, as the place of the rally was made with the view to withhold a greater number of working people from the ones going to the central rally and to avoid the fiasco in which their similar attempt ended on the 12th of December.

PCOF: Stop French Interference in Chad!

Once again, French authorities and the 1,450 men of the unit "Sparrow Hawk" have come to the rescue of the Chadian dictator, Idriss Déby.

One must have cheek to claim, as did the Minister of Defense, that "France is neutral" in this new war. In 2006, there were bombardments by French airplanes, deployed in Chad, which had prevented the regime of Déby from being overthrown. Today, the Mirages were "put aside", in a neighboring country, but this does not mean that the French military is remaining idle. Just by their presence, they continue to protect a regime that is only maintained by force. Tomorrow, we may learn that the French military participated actively in the fight that has caused very many civilian victims.

A new black page in the history of French Africa is being written.

Contrary to what the French authorities claim, this neo-colonial policy of supporting reactionary regimes that agree, in return, to sell off the wealth of their country, is not over! It may be that Sarkozy will end up giving up Déby, but French imperialism does not want to give up Chad, a key country for its military forces in Africa.

What is the Eufor [European Union Force] going to defend?

It is in Chad and the Central African Republic that Sarkozy and Kouchner want to deploy a strong European military force of 3700 men, directly involving fourteen countries. "This operation is an excellent demonstration of the European defense that has to be built. And no one can refuse to make their financial contributions. On the contrary, the agreed upon efforts have surpassed our expectations," Kouchner congratulated himself before the parliamentary representatives. But what will this European force “defend"?

Officially, it is to protect the "refugees and the displaced people" of the two countries. But how can one fail to see that the military and political interference destined to assert the presence of the European Union in a strategic region, has become the field for a struggle for influence among Europe, the USA and China, based on control of the oil resources, especially those of Doba [city in southern Chad – translator’s note], and those still untapped resources (uranium).

The defense of the "vital interests" of the EU is one of the tasks assigned to the European Defense in the Lisbon treaty. That means that the European imperialist powers intend to make all of the countries of the EU participate in the defense of their interests, their promoted vital interests of the EU.

Together with the people of Chad, we say: French Troops, Out Of Chad!

Together with the peoples of Africa, we say: French Troops, Out Of Africa!

Dismantle the French Bases!

And together with the peoples of Europe who do not want a policy of military intervention, we say: No to the Eufor!

French Africa has lasted too long; Solidarity with the peoples of Africa!

Police and neonazis heavily attack and injure antifascists; Neonazi demo cancelled

On Saturday, 2nd of February, the Greek State and its various guard-dogs (police, neonazis & other para-statists), united in striking the anti-fascist demonstration organized by leftist organizations, anarchists and anti-authoritarians. Two anti-fascists were heavily injured and transferred to hospital -one with a deep wound caused by a 20cm long knife stab at the belly area, and the second one with a serious injury on the head and knife stabs at his legs.

The - supposedly outlawed - neonazi group "Golden Dawn" had called for a demonstration on the evening of 2nd of February, to commemorate some incident between the greek and turkish military in 1998. Leftist groups had called for a counter-demonstration at the same square five hours earlier, at 2pm. The first anti-fascists arriving at the square discovered it had already been occupied from fascists, waiting there from the early hours. The anti-fascist demo, comprising of leftists, anarchists and anti-authoritarians, was confronted by the police and neo-nazis joined forces (photos): The fascists ran through the riot police line, attacked and stabbed two anti-fascists before running behind the police again (!) The heavy anti-fascist presence (significantly strengthened by the joining of a smaller demonstration against a biotechnology conference in Athens) forced the ban of the fascist demonstration.

The police were quick to heavily attack the anti-fascist gathering in an attempt to disperse and arrest people; anti-fascists retreated to, and occupied the deanship's university building and a march was called for 7 o' clock in the evening. Most the leftist organizations, despite having previously decided to occupy the square where the fascists wanted to protest, chose not to participate in the evening march.

The peaceful antifascist march started at 20:00 and was brutally attacked from the police early on and without any provocation; it took a huge amount of tear gas and beating for the police to disperse a march that the protesters made every effort to safeguard.

Many anti-fascists were brutally beaten by the police and about one hundred were arrested and taken to the police headquarters, where a spontaneous solidarity gathering formed and lawyers started arriving. By the end of the night all arrestees werel set free with no charges, except for one woman charged with three misdemeanours and also released later on. Of these people, 20 were taken to hospital for first aid treatment.

PAME: at the service of capital, the divisive and strikebreaking role of its reformist leaders

On the occasion of its 3rd Panhellenic Conference

In the reformist “Announcement-call” of PAME (=”All Workers’ Militant Front”) (“Rizospastis”, 27/5/2007) on the occasion of its third panhellenic conference, it is mentioned that the founding of PAME, in 1999, is “an accomplishment of the working class” and that PAME acts according to the line of “class struggle”.

First of all it has to be clarified from the beginning that PAME is not a trade union and therefore it cannot initiate a struggle like calling a strike. As its name suggests, it is rather a coordination platform set up by various associations and trade unionists. Even so, both of the claims mentioned above are utterly demagogic and bear absolutely no relation to reality, that is, to the nature of PAME which is not revolutionary but a reformist trade-union platform as it is shown below. Consequently, PAME neither constitutes an accomplishment of the working class, nor adheres to the line of the “revolutionary class struggle” for the “fulfillment of the tasks corresponding to the needs of the working class” as most falsely its leaders purport for the sake of disorientating and deceiving the workers.

It must be emphasized that the truly revolutionary trade unions were schools of class struggle and schools of socialism-communism, in other words, they were always linking: a) the struggle for the economic and social demands with the political demands, giving priority to the latter and b) the anti-imperialist with the revolutionary struggle for the abolition of the exploiting capitalist system and the establishment of socialism-communism.

The revolutionary trade unions, as organs of struggle against the capital have permanently and constantly inscribed on their flag the revolutionary slogan of Marx: “abolition of the wages system”. As Marx emphasized: “the trade unions are the schools of socialism. In trade unions, the workers are shaped into socialists, because the struggle against the capital is carried out, on daily basis, before their very eyes” and Lenin also said that: “the working class limiting itself to the economic struggle, loses its political independence, allows itself to be dragged by other political parties, betrays the great emblem: the emancipation of the working class must be carried out by the workers themselves”

In complete contradiction to the above, PAME was founded from the very beginning, in 1999, as a reformist trade union platform guided ideologically by Khrushchevian revisionism that is opposite and hostile to the proletarian revolution and the whole Marxist concept of socialism. It continues along the reformist course of the World Trade Union Organization (WTO) which despite the fact that followed a revolutionary line, from its creation (October 1945) until the mid-50s, after the final dominance of Khrushchevian revisionism (1956) it degenerated into a reformist trade union organization abandoning the revolutionary and anti-imperialist line for good.

It is precisely the line of WTO, promulgated during the period of Khrushchev – Brezhnev - Gorbachev, which the PAME (“K”KE) reformist leaders follow today as well as its fraternal trade union organization A.P. (SYN). The reformists of PASKE (PASOK) are the same whereas the DAKE (ND) fascists were always representatives of the employers’ trade unionism. All these factions, participate in the Executive Committee of the reformist General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Higher Union of Civil Servants (ADEDY).

The PAME leaders are reformist not only because they have abandoned the line of revolutionary struggle and follow the line of class co-operation and limiting the struggle to economic demands but because they have also resigned from the immediate economic demands such as the salary payment for the 1st of May and the return of all the money stolen from the Insurance Institutions. Moreover they play a divisive and strikebreaking role through the separate rallies they organize. Concerning the imperialist war against Iraq, they showed, like the “K”KE leadership, a pro-American and pro-imperialist attitude because, during the war demonstrations: a) they adopted the slogan “Greece out of the war”(!) instead of the right anti-imperialist one: “Anglo-American imperialist occupation forces out of Iraq” not blaming thus the Anglo-American imperialists and b) they supported and continue to support the Quislings of the fraternal Iraqi “C”P that welcomed the invasion and participated in the first puppet government installed by the Anglo-American forces.

A. The divisive role of the PAME reformists

During the last years, the PAME leaders organize, on permanent basis, separate rallies on the of 1st May causing thus a split in the trade union movement not only on the higher but also on intermediate level across the country. Their excuse for doing this is that these divisive rallies offer allegedly by themselves the possibility to break away from the reformists and they are, therefore, of revolutionary character. It is, of course, obvious that the separate rallies neither distance the workers from reformist nor do they have by themselves an anti-imperialist and revolutionary character. On the contrary, the features that make the revolutionaries and the reformists essentially distinct and give the revolutionary content of a trade unionist rally are two: first, the general anti-imperialist and revolutionary line in combination with the violent overthrow of capitalism second, the revolutionary line of class struggle that defends the class interests of the workers and the wide masses maintaining an unbreakable unity between economic and political demands and always subdued to the general revolutionary direction.

If the separate rallies were by themselves revolutionary, devoid of the corresponding content, then, following this “criterion” of the PAME reformists, one would make the preposterous conclusion that this year’s separate rally for the 1st of May organized by the DAKE fascists was also a “revolutionary” one! Of course it was a counter-revolutionary and pro-capitalist rally apart from divisive.

A quick reference to the two separate PAME rallies on the occasion of the 1st of May (in 2005 and 2007) will show much better not only the divisive role of the PAME leaders but the abandonment of the defense of, even, basic reformist demands. Both rallies were reformist, in their content, because of the general Khrushchevian line and also because they didn’t satisfy the second condition, that is the defense of the current interests of the working class.

In the rally of the 1st of May 2005, the PAME reformists came up with the false dilemma: “1st of May, strike or bank holiday?” The harm of such a slogan to the interests of the working class can be properly understood if one considers the fact that in Greece the working class has accomplished, through a long struggle, so that the 1st of May is also a paid bank holiday besides a day of strike. This hasn’t diminished the size of the 1st of May rallies at all. However the reactionary Karamanlis government decided to abolish the bank holiday, that year and, thus, the leaders of PAME, using the above slogan were, in essence, completely identified with this decision. The result was that hundreds of millions of Euros went to the capitalists and the bourgeois state instead of the working people. On the contrary, in the rally organized by the GSEE-ADEDY reformists, the central slogan was “pay the working people” a fact that permitted the president of GSEE to criticize, from the left, the PAME leaders and accuse them of being at the service of capitalist interests. In the same separate rally for the 1st of May, the PAME reformists leaders didn’t defend even this particular economic interest-accomplishment of the working class but the interests of the bourgeois class, since, through their treacherous attitude, they made easier for the capitalists to pocket the millions of Euros that should have been paid to the working people.

In fact, the PAME reformist leaders, due to their treacherous attitude supporting the abolition of the 1st May bank holiday, placed themselves to the right not only of the reformists of GSEE-ADEDY-A.P. but also of the DAKE fascists; the latter, fearing the political cost, didn’t dare to express in public their approval of the government’s decision to abolish the 1st of May bank holiday: “DAKE issued an announcement whereby calls the government to move the bank holiday from the 1st to 11th of May, as had been done in the past”. So, the only trade union organization that supported this reactionary decision of the government was PAME. This was the reason why the PAME leaders were warmly congratulated by the fascist ND cadre A. Andreoulakos.

This rally of PAME wasn’t only a divisive rally but also a rally in favor of the abolition of 1st May bank holiday, in other words, it was a pro-government rally supporting the reactionary decision of the Karamanlis government.

In 2007’s rally for the 1st of May, the reformists leaders of GSEE-ADEDY had rightly adopted as central slogan the following: “return all the stolen money back to the Insurance Institutions” (as a response to the government-backed embezzlement of Insurance funds) whereas in their separate, divisive, rally the PAME leaders not only didn’t adopt the above slogan as the central one but not at all. Instead, they put forward the pro-governmental request voiced by the DAKE fascists asking for the return of all the money stolen from the Insurance Institutions since 1950 (!), that is to say, never. In this way, the leaders of PAME were aligned-identified with: a) the DAKE fascists and b) the reactionary Karamanlis government both of whom were against the return of the stolen money back to the Insurance Institutions.

In this case too, the reformists of GSEE-ADEDY were at the left of the reformist leaders of PAME.

The two above mentioned separate rallies organized by PAME on the occasion of the 1st of May clearly show that not only they were not revolutionary rallies but they didn’t seek to defend not even the concrete and rightful economic demands of the working people: a) to receive the payment for the bank holiday of the first of May (2005) b) to have all the stolen money from the Insurance Institutions returned (2007). These rallies of PAME were, therefore, reformist, divisive and pro-governmental.

On the 1st of May 2006, the reformist leaders of PAME committed an almost unprecedented treason since they didn’t appeal for a struggle against industrial capitalists and capital in general but only against the reformist leaders adopting the slogan: “Turn your back to the compromised trade unionists”.

Not surprisingly, PAME faces serious problems due to its divisive tactics. One of the its founding cadres, and a long-term member in its Executive Secretariat, T. Fotopoulos, mentioned the following in his resignation letter: “In OTE (Greek Telecom) the ESK (the “C”PG representatives) allied with ASSE (the K.A. representatives – a small group participating in PAME as well) and both went to the elections under a common slate called A.M. But the next day, having secured the election of its own members, ESK remained a separate faction and not a part of A.M although these people were elected as nominees of the latter!

PAME doesn’t take part in the anti-globalization actions except in WTO which they strive to resurrect by establishing a European Buro where they are the…sole members. The persistence of “K”KE and PAME to hold separate rallies has caused frictions with the few small groups with which formed or is forming an alliance like DIKKI or K.A

B. The strikebreaking role of the PAME leaders

The whole activity and the role of PAME is not only divisive – in the framework, of course, of reformism that dominates the trade union movement today – and in favor of capital; it has become, in addition, during the last years, something much worse in relation to working people strikes: PAME has become, with its separate rallies, the number 1 strikebreaking force in the reformist trade union movement. This because, on permanent and systematic basis – and not by mistake – it causes a split in the strike mobilization of the working people undermining its massiveness from the beginning.

Let’s take for example the latest strikes of sailors, schoolteachers, university teachers and university students.

In the case of the sailors’ strike, the trade union leaders of PAME, apart from breaking the strike, they also organized separate rallies that weren’t simply divisive but were, first and foremost, strikebreaking clearly aiming at the split of the sailors unity and the weakening of their struggle. They were strikebreaking rallies in complete coordination with the governmental strikebreaking mechanisms, in the framework of “K”KE-ND cooperation. Their attitude was so shamelessly pro-governmental that, while the barbarous police was attacking the rally held in solidarity to the tailors, the PAME reformist Manusogiannakis appeared on television not to condemn the fascist police assault but to distance the position of PAME from the event stating that the people beaten up by MAT (the infamous special police forces) didn’t belong to PAME!!!

In the case of the schoolteachers’ great and continuous strike that shook up the whole country, the PAME trade unionists in the Primary School Teachers Federation (DOE) not only rejected the strike and tried to prevent it but, when this started and for the duration, they were systematically undermining it through separate rallies of strikebreaking character. We pointed out at the time:

“Only the reformist trade union factions (PASKE-A.P-P.) voted for the five-days strikes of the school teachers that shook up the whole country, as it is mentioned in “Rizospastis” in relation to the strikebreaking attitude of ESAK-DEE (the PAME representatives in the DOE): “the votes of PASKE, A.P and P. added up and the program of action was decided” (“R”, 7/7/2006, p. 18).

The reformist leaders of ESAK-DEE, having initially rejected and sabotaged the decision for the repeated 5-days strikes, went on to slander them claiming that they allegedly serve very well the pre-election needs of PASOK, few days before the October municipal elections (“R”, 7/7/2006, p.18). When the great strike began, they directly undermined the unity of the striking struggle by organizing separate rallies, merging, thus, with the DAKE reactionaries into a unified strikebreaking mechanism in the service of the government. It is more than obvious, and the PAME leaders cannot fail to realize, that without unity it’s impossible to achieve the massiveness of the struggle, a necessary condition for its successful completion” (“Anasintaxi”, No. 236, 15-30 October 2006, p.3).

Finally, the leaders of PAME came up against of the university teachers and students struggle; they openly opposed to the schools’ occupations by the students and the continuous strike of the university teachers. When the struggle began, they tried desperately to thwart it and then, after their failure to achieve this, they undermined it by organizing separate strikebreaking rallies. As a matter of fact the leaders of PAME went so far to place their rally stand next to the one of POSDEP-OLME-DOE in one of the great rallies held by the latter in Syntagma square. We wrote then about that rally:

“The only “note of discord”, the only negative and harmful event in that rally was the separate, strikebreaking rally in Omonia square organized by the reformist leaders of PAME. But this time they weren’t limited to the separate demonstration but they made a further step: they provocatively set up, obviously under instructions by the Karamanlis government, a second platform in Syntagma next to the one of POSDEP-OLME-DOE, not confronting the government but the Teachers Federation leading the struggle.

That the strikebreaking activity of the PAME leaders is carried out under the instructions of the Karamanlis government and in the framework of “K”KE-ND cooperation, was shown once more by the fact that also in this rally the blocs of PAME were small (numbering about 1000 people) (“PRIN”, 14/1/2007, p.13). The blocs were consciously and purposefully kept small in size in order to fulfill the goals agreed on with the government: a) the PAME leaders act in a strikebreaking way at the service of the government’s strikebreaking tactics b) avoid to put pressure on the government (a greater number of participants in the blocs would increase the pressure on the government upsetting the “K”KE-ND agreement)

Just imagine what would have been the picture if the other reformist trade union organizations had also set up their own platforms or what would have happened if the Teachers Federations POSDEP-OLME-DOE, as the leadership of the struggle, had rightly demanded the removal of the PAME reformists” (“Anasintaxi”, No 242, 15-31 January 2007, p.1).

From the above, it is evident that PAME is a reformist trade union organization which not simply follows the line of class cooperation but, at the same time, it plays a divisive and strikebreaking role, in the framework of the trade union movement, and in certain cases, like the ones mentioned above, its position is on the right wing of GSEE-ADEDY. This strikebreaking role is fully integrated-aligned with the strikebreaking mechanisms of the Karamanlis reactionary government.

C. Only the path of unity in struggle can stop the capital’s attacks

In their “Announcement-call”, the PAME leaders mention that their trade union platform “unites the working people into a unified class fighting capital and its agents”. This claim is utterly false and it only aims at the disorientation and the deception of the working class since the UNITY of the working class presupposes an anti-imperialist and revolutionary line in the trade unions, which doesn’t exist in the case of PAME because its activity is guided by the reformist social democratic Khrushchevian views, that is, the reformist line that dominated WTO from the mid-50s onwards. PAME, as a reformist trade union platform, is dividing the working class, just like in the older times, the social democratic reformist trade unions did and today GSEE, ADEDY.

PAME is not dividing only the working class but also the reformist camp with its separate rallies. Moreover, with the separate rallies of strikebreaking character during any striking mobilization, they, from the very beginning, cause a rift in the unity of the working class, the MASSIVENESS of the mobilization making it unavoidably INNEFECTIVE.

The class conscious and revolutionary workers cannot but raise the following fundamental question: “Is the working class able to repel the capital’s attacks given the absence of revolutionary trade unions and, if yes, how?”

The answer to this, fundamental and vital for the working class struggle, question has been already provided by life itself in the past but also at the present and it constitutes the answer of the revolutionary Marxism. The working class is indeed able – despite the absence of revolutionary trade unions – to repel the capital’s attacks. This can be achieved only along the path of UNITY that secures the maximum MASSIVENESS, two absolutely necessary conditions that can guarantee the EFFECTIVENESS of the mobilization and yield victory for the working people. The case in which the Insurance Bill was withdrawn in 2001 (by the Simitis government) after the massive panhelenic strike (at that time PAME wisely didn’t dare to organize a separate rally) and that of great, massive mobilization of students and working people against the Contract of First Employment (CFE) introduced by the right-wing government of Dominique de Villepin in France show the only right PATH. The same is shown by the great, massive mobilization of students and university students in Greece that prevented the reactionary revision of the Constitution’s article 16.

Moreover, the massive popular mobilization in Latin America countries – despite the absence of revolutionary trade unions and revolutionary communist parties – not only repelled the attacks coming from the indigenous capital, the IMF, the International Bank but also repeatedly ousted whole governments in a number of subcontinent countries.

Finally, it is a common knowledge that the sporadic acts of mobilization organized by PAME didn’t repel any attack from the capital, didn’t have and couldn’t have had absolutely no result; they were simply acts that served the petty-party and propaganda purposes of the PAME-“K”KE reformist leaders and aimed at the deception of the working people.

D. Further developments

After the massive rally organized by GSEE-ADEDY on the12th of December 2007 in Athens and in other Greek cities, the social democrat G. Marinos (new member of the “K”KE Politburo), hiding the fact that the panhelenic strike was called by the reformist leaders of GSEE-ADEDY, seems to worry very much about the size (5 times larger than the one of PAME) and the large participation of working people, including “a great number of employees in Olympic airways, lawyers, engineers, journalists and doctors” in the massive rally in Athens. Then, ridiculing himself he invites the working people to “think twice” about the fact they joined their trade unions rallies and urges them not to participate in theses but to the divisive, strikebreaking, progovernmental ones of the reformist PAME. At the same time, he advertises it as an allegedly “class force” which follows “the line of class struggle” that secures “the unity of the working class”!!!

V.I. Lenin: Our Revolution (Apropos of N. Sukhanov's Notes)

The text translated in Greek published in Anasintaxi issue 265 (1-15/1/2008)
I

I have lately been glancing through Sukhanov's notes on the revolution. What strikes one most is the pedantry of all our petty-bourgeois Democrats and of all heroes of the Second International. Apart from the fact that they are all extremely fainthearted, that when it comes to the minutest deviation from the German model [of Socialism] even the best of them fortified themselves with reservations — apart from this characteristic, which is common to all petty-bourgeois Democrats and has been abundantly manifested by them throughout the revolution, what strikes one is their slavish imitation of the past.

They all call themselves Marxists, but their conception of Marxism is impossibly pedantic. They have completely failed to understand what is decisive in Marxism, namely, its revolutionary dialectics. They have even absolutely failed to understand Marx's plain statements that in times of revolution the utmost flexibility is demanded, and have even failed to notice, for instance, the statements Marx made in his letters — I think it was in 1856 — expressing the hope of combining the peasant war in Germany, which might create a revolutionary situation, with the working-class movement — they avoid even this plain statement and walk around and about it like a cat around a bowl of hot porridge.

Their conduct betrays them as cowardly reformists who are afraid to deviate from the bourgeoisie, let alone break with it, at the same time they disguised their cowardice with the wildest rhetoric and braggartry. But what strikes one in all of them even from the purely theoretical point of view is their utter inability to grasp the following Marxist considerations: up to now they have seen capitalism and bourgeois democracy in Western Europe follow a definite path of development, and cannot conceive that this path can be taken as a model only mutatis mutandis, only with certain amendments (quite insignificant from the standpoint of the general development of world history).

First — the revolution connected with the first imperialist world war. Such revolution was bound to reveal new features, or variations, resulting from the war itself, the world has never seen such a war in such a situation. We find that since the war the bourgeoisie of the wealthiest countries have to this day been unable to restore "normal" bourgeois relations. Yet our reformists — petty-bourgeois who make a show of being revolutionaries — believed, and still believe, that normal bourgeois relations are the limit (thus far shalt thou go and no farther). And even their conception of "normal" is extremely stereotyped and narrow.

Secondly, they are complete strangers to the idea that while the development of world history as a whole follows general laws it is by no means precluded, but, on the contrary, presumed, that certain periods of development may display peculiarities in either the form or the sequence of this development. For instance, it has not even occurred to them that because Russia stands on the borderline between civilized countries and the countries which this war has for the first time definitely brought into the orbit of civilization — all the Oriental, non-European countries — she could and was, indeed, bound to reveal certain distinguishing features; although these, of course, are in keeping with the general line of world development, they distinguish her revolution from those which took place in the West European countries and introduce certain partial innovations as the revolution moves on to the countries of the East.

Infinitely stereotyped, for instance, is the argument they learned by rote during the development of West-European Social-Democracy, namely, that we are not yet ripe for socialism, but as certain "learned" gentleman among them put it, the objective economic premises for socialism do not exist in our country. Does it not occur to any of them to ask: what about the people that found itself in a revolutionary situation such as that created during the first imperialist war? Might it not, influenced by the hopelessness of its situation, fling itself into a struggle that would offer it at least some chance of securing conditions for the further development of civilization that were somewhat unusual?

"The development of the productive forces of Russia has not yet attained the level that makes socialism possible." All the heroes of the Second International, including, of course, Sukhanov, beat the drums about this proposition. They keep harping on this incontrovertible proposition in a thousand different keys, and think that it is decisive criterion of our revolution.

But what if the situation, which drew Russia into the imperialist world war that involved every more or less influential West European country and made her a witness of the eve of the revolutions maturing or partly already begun in the East, gave rise to circumstances that put Russia and her development in a position which enabled us to achieve precisely that combination of a "peasant war" with the working-class movement suggested in 1856 by no less a Marxist than Marx himself as a possible prospect for Prussia?

What if the complete hopelessness of the situation, by stimulating the efforts of the workers and peasants tenfold, offered us the opportunity to create the fundamental requisites of civilization in a different way from that of the West European countries? Has that altered the general line of development of world history? Has that altered the basic relations between the basic classes of all the countries that are being, or have been, drawn into the general course of world history?

If a definite level of culture is required for the building of socialism (although nobody can say just what that definite "level of culture" is, for it differs in every Western European country), why cannot we began by first achieving the prerequisites for that definite level of culture in a revolutionary way, and then, with the aid of the workers' and peasants' government and Soviet system, proceed to overtake the other nations?

January 16, 1923

II

You say that civilization is necessary for the building of socialism. Very good. But why could we not first create such prerequisites of civilization in our country by the expulsion of the landowners and the Russian capitalists, and then start moving toward socialism? Where, in what books, have you read that such variations of the customary historical sequence of events are impermissible or impossible?

Napoleon, I think, wrote: "On s'engage et puis ... on voit." rendered freely this means: "First engage in a serious battle and then see what happens." Well, we did first engage in a serious battle in October 1917, and then saw such details of development (from the standpoint of world history they were certainly details) as the Brest peace, the New Economic Policy, and so forth. And now there can be no doubt that in the main we have been victorious.

Our Sukhanovs, not to mention Social-Democrats still farther to the right, never even dream that revolutions cannot be made any other way. Our European philistines never even dream that the subsequent revolutions in Oriental countries, which possess much vaster populations in a much vaster diversity of social conditions, will undoubtedly display even greater distinctions than the Russian Revolution.

It need hardly be said that a textbook written on Kautskian lines was a very useful thing in its day. But it is time, given that, to abandon the idea that it foresaw all the forms of development of subsequent world history. It would be timely to say that those who think so are simply fools.

CMKP Condemns Bhutto Assassination

Press Release 30-12-07

Karachi, Dec 29: The heinous horrified assassination of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, a most popular leader and former prime minister, has once against testified the magnitude of the tyrant savage system controlled by military establishment. What she fell prey to the suicide bombing and so-called Islamic militancy were the culmination of the politics of Islamisation and Jihad that where put into motion by the military Zia regime and still being done by a section of establishment and supported by a group of fanatics. The objective has been just to brutalise the society and thwart the democratic aspirations of the people, to prolong the undemocratic rule. This has also showed the fault of the existing socio-economic and political system that needs its elimination through sincere and protected struggle. Moreover, nobody is safe under military-dominated rule.

In a press statement, Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party Pakistan (CMKP) Chairman Sufi Khalik Baloch condemned the brutal murder of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, while urging to expose and punish all those involved in such crime against humanity and decency. He added that at such a sad moment, he shared the shock and grief equally with the leaders and workers of PPP as well as her family. He paid tributes that she died bravely as she was conscious of the threat under the cover of religious extremism, although the fact is that she became the target for the dislikeness of domestic cliques that are counted in the politics of Pakistan. He hoped her blood could not go in vain but helpstrengthen democracy and socio-economic rights of the people.

The 9th meeting of the revisionist parties in Minsk

Article published in Anasintaxi issue 264 (15-31/12/2007)

The 9th meeting of the revisionist parties was held in Minsk, Bellorussia (3-5/11/2007), on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the October Revolution. In this meeting, parties from the whole revisionist spectrum took part including, of course, the social-democratic “K”KE sending 5 delegates (Papariga, Koutsoumpas, Angourakis, Vayenas, Pontikos) a fact that indicates the importance it attaches in these meetings.

Overall, 73 parties took part in the meeting, compared to the 70 in Lisbon in 2006 and the 77 in Athens in 2005. This shows that the parties that form the core of these meeting seem to stabilize. At the same time:

a) The final statement of the conference, apart from the Khruschevian views it contains, is characterized by a lower level of political analysis compared to the Athens declaration in 2005,

b) an increasing number of the European parties that participate in these meetings establish relations with the so called Party of the European Left.

It goes without saying that the premises of all the conference talks on the October Revolution was not revolutionary Marxism, that is Marxism-Leninism-Stalinism, but the counter-revolutionary Khruschevian revisionism, a variation of bourgeois ideology, whereas the level of these talks, in terms of political analysis, was very low.

All the parties that participated in this meeting are bourgeois parties of the social-democratic type (=Khruschevian parties), and some of them are openly reactionary, maintaining the appellation “communist” only to deceive the working class.

There were parties like CPRF and “K”KE in which nationalistic and Christian trends are openly dominant. We remind only one characteristic example: “The Russian deputy Victor Zorkalchev defended the cohesion of the “orthodox” and “Christian” Europe. The member of the Communist Party of Russia said that “without the orthodox faith Europe is not going to be a unified body” and claimed that “the devoid of evidence anti-deism is a current that has caused great damage in the world” (“Eleytherotypia”, 29/6/2001).

There were others like the Iraqi “C”P that participated in the first puppet government of Iraq formed by the Anglo-American invading forces (outdoing, thus, in treacherous behavior “K”KE which, in the period of 1989-1991, formed a government, initially, with the monarcho-fascist party of ND and then, afterwards with both of the bourgeois parties ND-PASOK) or the “C”P of India and “C”P of India (M) which played a leading role in the murderous police attacks against the rising peasants in Nadigram.

In the conference there was Kosuta’s Party of the Italian Communists which together with the Italian reactionaries bombed the people of Yugoslavia and also Voronin’s Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldavia which while in power the country joined NATO and send troops to Iraq (see “Anasyntaxi”, issue 202). Finally, we should not forget the “Party of Workers of Belgium” headed by Ludo Martens former Gorbachev’s fun and, today, prima ballerina of the international Khruschevian revisionism.

It is more than obvious that if these parties aim at any kind of coordination the latter will be towards the further split in the working class movement and the preservation of the exploiting capitalist system.

Benazir's Murder and the Inconsolable Grief of the Pakistani People

Taimur Rahman

Tragically, the fate of the first female prime minister in the Muslim world has met with a violent end. The people of Pakistan are gripped by inconsolable grief at the news of the murder of Benazir Bhutto.

In the PPP the people of Pakistan saw a mainstream political party that spoke about the rights of poor people. The slogan of roti, kapra, makan (bread, clothes, housing) galvanized millions against the military dictatorship of Ayub Khan in the late 1960s. The democratic reforms undertaken by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto challenged the interests of the traditional ruling class of Pakistan. The ruling class in turn began to support Islamic fundamentalism and military rule as a counter-weight to this democratic upsurge. After Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged by the religious fundamentalist regime of Zia ul Haq, Benazir Bhutto led the PPP for the restoration of democracy. Despite the ostensible return of democracy in 1988, the establishment continued to harbour intense hatred and refused to reconcile themselves to the "populist" currents of the PPP. General Pervaiz Musharraf treated the PPP no different than all previous military dictators. Political rumors notwithstanding, repression within the country forced Benazir into an eight year exile.

The "war on terror", however, forced the army to renege with great reluctance its long-standing collaboration with religious fundamentalists. Seething with hatred, the fundamentalists made a serious bid for power this July leading to the episode of the lal masjid (red mosque). Benazir was the only national leader with the courage to take a clear and uncompromising stance against Islamic extremism. Moreover, she was the only political leader with the popular support that made such a statement legitimate and gave it weight.

Given the precarious position of Musharraf's dictatorship, Benazir's stance opened up the opportunity for a softening of the attitude of the military towards the PPP. The military saw it as an opportunity to stabilize their rule. The PPP saw it as an opportunity to get their principle leader back into the country. The West saw this as an opportunity to stabilize Pakistan and keep it focused on the "war on terror". People, groaning under poverty and increasing cost of living, saw it as an opportunity to obtain some relief. And the fundamentalists saw it as the incarnation of their greatest mortal enemy. The latter openly declared that they would kill Benazir if she dared to return. In October, upon Benazir's return to Karachi, they tried and failed. Today they did not.

The overwhelming number of people hold the military dictatorship of General Pervaiz Musharraf responsible for failing to provide adequate security. Furthermore, the finger of suspicion cannot so easily be lifted away from elements within the establishment. Benazir herself stated that in addition to Islamic fundamentalists in tribal areas, she suspected that certain elements within the ISI also wanted her dead.

While there will be many who try to minimize the public outcry against this incident by pointing to the many short-comings, inconsistencies and faults of the PPP, it is clear that the biggest fault of Benazir was that she spoke for the secularism, democracy and most importantly for the rights of the poor and dispossessed of Pakistan. For this fault, she was prepared to and did pay the ultimate price.

The Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party condemns the murder of Benazir Bhutto.

Down with religious fundamentalism and military rule!
Long live a peoples revolution!

Moldova: P"C"RM's split and transformation to a openly social-democratic party

Article published in Anasintaxi issue 202 (15-31/3/2005)

Important and rapid developments took place in the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM). PCRM – a continuation of the brezhnievite Communist Party of Moldova (part of CPSU) – had achieved an important victory in 2001 elections having openly adopted social-democratic views and, of course, the country’s accession to the EU*. At that time, the local social-democratic leadership of “K”KE was writing hymns in “Rizospastis”: (“The developments in Moldova, a ray of light”, “R”, 14/4/2002, p.3, “A ray of hope for the people of Moldavia. Ten years after the great overthrow, a ray of light was seen two months ago when the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova came first in the parliamentary elections” “R” 22/4/2001, p.19).

Aleka Papariga – who, in the past, a few months before the official collapse of the USSR, had presented Gorbachev with a statuette of Hercules “for the Herculean effort he makes” – congratulated the PCRM secretary V. Voronin with the words: “You helped the kindle of hope in this tragic decade” (“R” 18/4/2001, p. 3). As a matter of fact, the “K”KE leaders went as far as to present the PCRM’s revisionist program – a program that denies the revolutionary struggle and adopts the revisionist theory of two stages – as revolutionary! In PCRM’s program is mentioned that in the first stage “the communists (i.e. the brezhnievite revisionists) in collaboration with the progressive forces will succeed in eliminating the negative consequences of the reforms” without the establishment of proletarian dictatorship and without armed struggle! Actually they admit that “the operation of the private sector will be permitted mainly in the sphere of production and distribution of consumer’s goods and services” (!) (“R” 22/3/2001).

Today, four years later, after the “achievement” of having its number of deputies reduced in the 2005 elections compared to 2001, from 71 to 56, and after forming an alliance with the Christian-Democratic People’s Party (11 deputies) in order to secure the country’s presidency for Voronin (in the ballot that took place on the 4th of April), PCRM made another step towards the completion of its social-democratic course. According to the Russian newspaper Komersant, the leader of the Christian-Democratic People’s Party, Yuri Roshka, decided to support Voronin after an agreement on passing the new mass media legislation and the European course of Moldova. After a recent plenary meeting of the CC of PCRM, Voronin, in a statement broadcasted by Itar-Tass, said that within the next two years PCRM has to become a party of social-democratic orientation and change its name.

At the same time, as the INFO TAG news agency announced, cadres of PCRM left from the party and they established a new one under the name “Communist Party of Leninist Type”. As the executive secretary Igor Kucher stated, 429 delegates from 20 cities and provinces of Moldova took part in the founding congress. Kucher accused PCRM of betraying the principles of Leninism and weakening the national sovereignty of Moldova with its internal and foreign policies.

In any case, PCRM is a party, for which “K”KE expressed its “unreserved solidarity” (“R”,13/4/2001, p. 4) and claimed that it is an example that “the international communist movement is alive and that is developing…”!, that has taken openly its course, the course chosen by its leaders in the 20th Congress of CPSU, the course of social-democracy and assimilation to the capitalist system.

* Voronin maintains exceptionally good relations with the U.S. Moldova participates in the occupation forces of Iraq with 42 soldiers.

Toufan: Demand the Immediate Release of Arrested Students in Iran!

A Letter to the Marxist-Leninist and Worker Parties and Organisations

Demand the Immediate Release of Arrested Students in Iran!

Dear Comrades,

In recent days, the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran has waged a wide spread and barbaric offence against the freedom-seeker university students, particularly against the students of Tehran University.

This is not the first time that the regime of the Islamic Republic confronts the student mass, the scientific asset of the society, with such a barbarism and cruelty. The capitalist regime of Iran has resorted to naked suppression and despotism in the universities in order to silence the justice and freedom seeking students' voice, a voice that reflects the general crisis of the society. But the revolutionary and combatant students ridicule the terror and arrest by the regime's military and security forces and intensify their just struggles.

On the occasion of 16th of Azar(*), the Students Day, the students of many universities demonstrated by carrying banners and placards and issuing statements demanding equal rights for women, the withdrawal of all military and security forces from the universities, freedom of expression and pen, separation of mosque from the state, the unconditional release of all imprisoned students, and the freedom of all political prisoners and defended the political and occupational rights of workers. Alongside these just and democratic rights, the student movement condemned any imperialist aggression against Iran and opposed any interference into the internal affairs of the country.

Dear Comrades,

Due to its rotten and reactionary nature, the regime of the Islamic Republic is in fear of the student movement becoming wide spread and to link itself with the struggle of the working class and of the other strata of the society. To remain in power, the regime sees no other option except falsely accusing the student activists and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

In the past 10 days, more than 30 left and progressive student activists were arrested and no information is released about their situation.

The Party of Labour of Iran (Toufan) is calling on all Marxist-Leninist and worker parties and organisations and all progressive individuals to protest in any preferable form the policy of suppression and despotism of the regime of the Islamic Republic and to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all students.

Long Live the International Solidarity!

For Immediate and Unconditional Release of all Imprisoned Students!
