EMEP: This lawlessness will be tried in the public conscience

In its endeavour to create a political regime defined by a one-man state characterised by oppression, violence and prohibition, the AKP Government has been responsible for all sorts of lawlessness. Including the arrest of politicians, elected officials, journalists and defenders of human rights; the closure of newspapers, magazines, television channels and radio channels; and the prohibition of strikes and protests…
Our party member, media adviser and Evrensel Writer Yusuf Karataş has been arrested as part of the investigation into the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) in Diyarbakır. The allegations brought against Karataş are without basis.
The DTK which was formed in 2007 was at the time invited to various government meetings and was consulted in relation to the resolution of the Kurdish issue. At times local AKP MPs also attended the meetings of the DTK but today – a decade later – as a result of the current political climate it has become defined as an illegal organisation. It is within the context of these activities that our member Yusuf Karataş has been arrested and accused. The prosecutor includes Yusuf Karataş’s participation in the Mesopotamia Seasonal Agricultural Workers Assembly (which was formed to protect the rights of agricultural workers) as illegal activity. The prosecutor also refers to his participation in the protest against the Roboski Massacre as well as the protest on the Supreme Election Council’s decision to veto independent MP candidates.
The accusations brought against Yusuf Karataş are part of the farcical proceedings that have been taking place recently. It has become the norm for political cases to be brought which take no account of legal criteria. Yusuf Karataş and the many others who are being tried in the same proceedings have simply been caught in this net. However, the situation cannot continue like this. A system which is led by illegality and a judicial system that disregards all rules and proceedings cannot survive for long. Because tyranny cannot continue forever.
These proceedings too will be judged by history and are being tried in the conscience of the public.
We will not accept this illegal process against our party member Yusuf Karataş. We will continue to struggle against all illegality, arbitrary arrests and attempts to criminalise innocent people.

October 10 is not only a day of commemoration; it is also a day of struggle!

We lost 101 friends, of which 16 were members of our party, in the October 10 Ankara massacre. The demands they had chanted in favour of on that Black Day – labour, peace and democracy – still maintain their urgency and importance.
The Ankara massacre took place at a highly tense period in our country and the Middle East. The expansionist neo-Ottomanist foreign policy of the AKP government in Syria and in the Middle East had worsened the war, and its sectarian and nationalist policies had polarised and fragmented the masses, so as to liquidate the hard-won rights of the working class. The bombing in Reyhanlı, Hatay in 2013 was a result of the Syria policy of the AKP government. Besides, disapproving of the results of parliamentary elections held on 7 June 2015, the rulers decision to run a new election. The government had also knocked over the negotiation table with the Kurds in Turkey. Under these conditions, thousands of people gathered in Ankara to demand peace and democracy; 101 demonstrators were killed in front of Ankara Railway Station.
Bombings in İstanbul, Gaziantep and Ankara followed the massacre. War policies of the government were tenaciously followed within and outside Turkish borders, resulting in the loss of scores of lives. Apart from the blasts in the last year, Turkey has also witnessed an attempted coup. Following this, the government who called the failed coup “a gift from God” orchestrated an autocoup or self-coup. As part of the cleansing operation: almost 100 thousand public sector workers have been dismissed; a vast number of people have been arrested; dissident TV channels, newspapers and radios have been shut down.
October 10 is not a day when we only grieve our losses. As long as the political climate leading to this massacre prevails, October 10 would be a day we fight for democracy and settle scores with the culprits of this massacre. It’s the government that creates this atmosphere.
The prohibition of the October 10 commemorations in Ankara isn’t acceptable. Despite these attempts, the truth will come to light, and the perpetrators will be held to account. We will fervidly fight for this for as long as it takes.
As exhibited in the documents that have seen daylight after the massacre, the likelihood of a massacre was known to the security forces. The struggle for revealing this reality would continue. The struggle for the prosecution and sentencing of officials at all levels – the intelligence service, police, etc.- who are responsible for this massacre would continue.
We have made a promise to the brave friends we lost on October 10: we will vehemently struggle for democracy, peace and freedom. At a time when the fascistic rule of the AKP is being swiftly installed; the October 10 trial would be an arena wherein we fight for democracy and settle scores via legal means with the culprits of this massacre.
At a time of the country is dragged into the Syrian quagmire; the clashes and massacres continued within the borders of Turkey; repression and police violence are increasing in our country; it is not only our political duty to enhance the struggle for democracy and peace but also our obligation to the friends we’ve lost on October 10.
We call on all the labour, peace and democracy forces to unite for this purpose.

Kobane needs international support

Iraq has effectively been divided into three parts after the US led occupation. Kurds have taken control in the North while the Shiites in the East and South and the Sunni Arabs in the West. The power in Iraq has been shared between the Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds but the collaboration did not last long. Kurds virtually announced a free Kurdistan in the North. Sunnis complained from their lack of say in governance of the country and distribution of petrol, opposing and resisting Shiites, sometimes engaging even in armed struggle. During this period, radical religious powers such as Al-Qaeda and Salafi Jihadists gained strength. These groups have been supported by Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Later, when the armed struggle supported by the imperialist powers - led by the US - against the government in Syria started, the Al Qaeda and Salafi forces in Iraq entered Syria and became the main force fighting against the Assad regime. They had the weaponry, the experience and a centrally led organisation while the FSA forces supported by the US were fragmented, disorganised and lacked any real experience of war. The anti-Assad coalition led by Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as well as the US and the EU, have supported the Al Nusra Front that included Al Qaeda linked and other radical groups, believing that they had the power to defeat Assad. However, the practices of radical religious groups in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Egypt and Syria have disturbed the US and its allies. These groups, while serving the US and its allies on the one hand, tried to establish Sharia Law in their localities and caused damage to US interests on the other.

Following these developments, especially after the murders of US diplomats in Libya by radical groups and the events in Egypt, the US and its allies reduced the support provided to radical religious organisations in Syria.
Groups such as Al Qaeda, Al Nusra, Salafis, etc., upon realising they cannot defeat the Assad forces in Syria, declared their sovereignty and set up an ‘Islamic State’ covering the areas of Syria under their control and areas under Sunni Arab control in Iraq.
Meanwhile, taking advantage of the vacuum created by the fighting between the Assad forces and FSA and Al Nusra, Syrian Kurds have created three autonomous regions near the Turkish border in Northern Syria. The area controlled by the Kurds is called Rojava (meaning West or the West of Kurdistan in Kurdish). Kurds, having established their autonomous Cantons in Rojava, armed themselves, mainly against the attacks from radical religious groups. Representatives of these Cantons have been arguing that governance was not exclusively Kurdish but Arabs, Yazidis, Armenians, Turkmens and other minorities and religious groups were sharing power and hence they created a democratic autonomous alternative. But it is clear that the PKK’s political line is dominant in the governance of Rojava. This line is represented by the Democratic Union Party (PYD). The security of Rojava is under the domain of the armed People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ). YPG/YPJ have about 5000 armed members. Following the outset of the civil war in Syria, PYD has political and military control of the cities of Kobane, Afrin and Cinderas in the state of Aleppo; the towns of Amude, Derik and Efrin in the state of Hasaka, the cities of Darbasiyah, Resulayn (across Ceylanpınar in Şanlıurfa, Turkey) and the town of Tirbesipiye. YPG, the armed wing of PYD, have taken over the town of Resulayn from Al Nusra forces after an armed conflict and brought the tanks they seized from them to Kobane.

The three Cantons in Rojava do not share borders with each other. Assad Regime established Sunni Arab villages between Kurdish settlements. These are now under IS control.
About four months ago, IS armed forces have started their advance towards the east aiming for Baghdad. They quickly took over the city of Mosul, a major city in Iraq. In the areas of the advance and in Mosul, where Sunni Iraqi soldiers put up no resistance and handed their weapons over to IS. Some joined the ranks of IS and some fled to the east. While IS was advancing on Baghdad, the Shiite leader of the Iraqi government was replaced, the US provided the Central Iraqi government with arms and military experts, and supported them with air strikes against IS. The IS reaction was to do a u-turn and advance on the Kurdish areas of Iraq and Syria. The Barzani forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Northern Iraq could not withstand the IS onslaught and retreated, abandoning their positions and weapons.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) forces (which have been waging a war for 30 years against Turkey until the recent ceasefire) confronted the IS forces and managed to halt their advance in places. IS forces got closer to the Iraqi Kurdistan’s capital Erbil and the important oil town of Kirkuk and they overran the Yazidi city of Shengal. Tens of thousands of Yazidis fled Shengal and have taken refuge in Turkey.

The US support helped stop the IS advance on Iraqi Kurdistan and following this IS began to attack Kobane. It is now surrounded on three sides by IS forces in the east, south and west, except for the border with Turkey in the north. IS forces have tanks and heavy artillery while the YPG/YPJ forces in Kobane only have light infantry rifles. The elderly, women and children in Kobane have escaped to Turkey. Tens of thousands are in the town of Suruc in Turkey, camping in the open and going hungry.

Kobane wants arms to fight against IS. They want Turkey to open a corridor for them to bring tanks and heavy artillery abandoned in the Eastern Canton by the Iraqi Kurds and Iraqi military forces and seized by the YPG. IS forces are now within 1km of the YPG positions.

Our party and other progressive democratic forces in Turkey are staging demonstrations to get peoples’ support and force the government to help Kobane. Those that support the resistance go to Suruc in the Turkish side to access Kobane to bring in food and other supplies. They guard a 25km stretch of the Turkish-Syrian border to prevent IS militants filtering into Turkish borders and launching an attack from the north. Many Kurdish youth from Turkey cross the border into Kobane to fight against IS and support the resistance.

Meanwhile, the Turkish government has joined the US coalition against IS and wants to create a 40-50km wide buffer zone in Rojava, along the Turkish-Syrian border to settle the Syrian refugees that crossed the borders into Turkey during the civil war. The populations in this zone will be disarmed (hence PYD and YPG will lose control and influence in Rojava and the coalition forces, including Turkey, will defend the area against IS and the Assad forces). Later, an FSA army to be set up in this area to fight the Assad forces.

The progressive and democratic forces in Turkey stand against this plan. We oppose a buffer zone and the Turkish military crossing the border. We want Turkey to stop supporting IS and allowing its militants use Turkish borders. We want Turkey to support the peoples of Kobane and Rojava against IS attacks.
Our party believes that in the current situation international solidarity and support for Kobane is vital. We call on your parties and organisations and your peoples to support and show solidarity with Kobane and Rojava.

We think that solidarity with the peoples of the region against the imperialist plans and attacks is one of the most urgent political tasks.

Imperialism will lose and the victors will be the peoples.

Long live the Kobane resistance

Labour Party (EMEP), Turkey: About the Mine Massacre in Turkey

The reason for the
Soma Massacre is the insatiable indulgence in exploitation by the bosses

284 miners have lost their lives in Soma, Manisa in a mine owned by Soma Coal Inc. The death toll is expected to rise and there is a high number of casualties.

We send our condolences to the working class and the families of the deceased, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

We cannot call what happened in Soma an accident like the Government representatives are trying to. On the contrary, not an accident or fate this is a real massacre!

According to figures, during the 12 years of AKP rule, over 14.000 workers have lost their lives. The Soma Massacre has become the pinnacle of these murders.

All these murders are a result of an anti-labour a policy. The neo-liberal policies by the AKP government, as well as those before them; privatisation, subcontracting, increased workload with reduced number of workers, increased exploitation in the name of improved performance; these are all reasons for these murders.

A motion to set up a ‘Committee of Investigation’ due to frequent deaths at Soma Coal Inc., put forward by MPs from the political parties of CHP, MHP and BDP, was defeated in the Parliament (TBMM) by AKP MPs votes only 20 days ago.

The parliamentary question by HDP Istanbul MP Levent Tuzel was practically dismissed by the relevant ministry, stating that workplaces are regularly inspected.

The managers at the mine where the Soma Massacre took place have praised the virtues of privatisation, enabling them to reduce the price of coal by 60%. This must be how the cost of coal must be reduced! Reducing the number of workers, increasing workload, getting rid of experienced workers to replace them with cheaper, less experienced workers, employing ignorant, inexperienced workers through sub-contractors, preventing unionisation and depriving workers of their basic rights, reducing expenditure on security in the name of reducing costs, breaching worker security and health regulations, close relations with the ruling party leading to avoiding inspections, etc.; these are the practices they boast about in the name of cost reduction and they led to this blatant massacre.

Murders at work and this last massacre obviously are not fate.

Murders at work will stop only when the bosses drive for profit and indulgence in exploitation stops. Our party is working to end the system of exploitation.

We are very sorry for the worker friends we have lost. The best thing we can do for them now is to unite against exploitation and raise the struggle against it.

We call on the government to give up policies that are against workers.

The Energy and Natural Resources Minister and the Work and Pensions Minister should be the first to immediately resign. Those responsible should be sentenced and given the severest sentences.

The legislation, currently inadequate to secure worker health and security, should be reviewed; workplaces should be inspected by experts on workplace security. Serious penalties should be introduced for bosses of companies that do not meet the necessary worker security and health measures.

We call on workers and unions to protest the Soma Massacre with strikes and rallies. We should not let such a massacre be swept under with messages of condolences. As a country, it is the right time to reach for the switch and stop life in order to prevent such future massacres.

EMEP: State terror in Turkey

emep17th June 2013

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) government has, once again, tried to suppress the people’s demand for freedom and democracy expressed in Gezi Park demonstrations with the attack towards Gezi Park on the evening of 15 June. Absolute state terror is being directed at the people manifesting their demands through democratic and peaceful demonstrations.

While the extent of the attacks have reached such a point as to carry the intention of killing people, similar to junta periods, it has not been possible to receive any news from those taken under police custody. Police forces have been reinforced with military units and the country is faced with an unnamed martial law, declaration of a state of emergency.

Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan is hanging on to such rhetoric as; “these events are a result of external forces conspiring against me and my government, those concocting games, interest lobbies, illegal marginal organisations etc. etc.” as though they were life savers. Yet they are all words adding up to a demagogy constructed in order to slander the legitimate protests of the people and find a cover for fascistic actions.

The attack began while (a series of) meetings organised by the Taksim Solidarity Platform in order to determine the tendencies regarding Gezi Park were continuing and as a result of the personal command issued by Prime Minister Erdoğan during his Ankara rally and under the control both of the Governor of Istanbul and Chief of Police. This fact on its own is enough to demonstrate that Tayyip Erdoğan and the AKP government has no intention or desire to solve the issue through peaceful methods and dialogue; that, on the contrary, there is an inclination to collect new political gain from the “chaos” by escalating conflicts and tension.

Nevertheless; the “victim” role acted out very successfully by Tayyip Erdoğan during the last 12 years will not serve this time around. With these last events; our people have fully grasped that what they are faced with is “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”. Like every dictator enthusiast Tayyip Erdoğan is advancing towards the inevitable end at full speed.

No force can stand in front of the will of the people… Hence neither will Tayyip Erdoğan or his government be able to.

Attacks towards the people must cease immediately. The police force must withdraw from the streets and those responsible must be removed from office in order to stand trial. The political responsibility of these events falls on Prime Minister Erdoğan and the AKP government. The Prime Minister and his government must apologise to the people and declare that they accept the demands of the people.

I call on the labour and democracy forces of our country and all our citizens to unite and struggle in order to end this state terror directed at the legitimate, democratic demands of our people.

President

WE HAVE WON! HAYAT TV IS NOT BEING SILENCED!

hayat_logoAs a result of the meetings held with the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), the Council has withdrawn its decision to cease our broadcast. RTÜK has also stated that it will resolve the licence issue at the soonest possible date. Hayat Television has eliminated the threat of a blackout with intensive support from the workers, labourers, youth, women, impoverished masses, intellectuals, artists and the people as a whole who have deemed it to be their own channel as of the moment it has initiated its establishment.

The reaction of all the different sections of society struggling for democracy has produced this result and a grave mistake was avoided. The voice of the people defending their freedom of information and raised through the slogans of tens of thousands from the streets and both through the messages and actions from their houses, workplaces, Gezi Park, from each and every corner of their living domains has reinforced our voice.

Today Hayat Television is stronger than it was yesterday and will continue its broadcasting with the consciousness that its responsibility has increased and on the basis of all its former broadcasting accumulation.

We extend our endless gratitude to all the masses of people who, claiming their channel, have given their support for it to overcome the danger it faced and who have always found a place for themselves in our screen! We will continue our path, stronger each day due to your support and contributions…

URGENT: Hayat TV to close down

Hayat TV, a progressive Turkish TV channel of the working people, the youth, women and the intellectuals is facing closure.

We believe this is a blow to people’s freedom of information.

The decision for the closure is made by the broadcasting regulator RTUK, Radio & Television High Commission with the pretext that Hayat TV has no licence.

This is not true. Hayat TV has been broadcasting since 21 March 2007 by ofcom licence via TURKSAT satellite. But a recent change in broadcasting rules via TURKSAT requires broadcasters to obtain a RTUK licence to be able to broadcast via satellite.

Our application for a RTUK licence has been submitted and pending for a decision. We have taken all the necessary steps and RTUK agreed that we could carry on broadcasting as it is until a RTUK licence is granted.

However, RTUK is now making an arbitrary decision to close down our channel because of, we believe, our broadcast of recent protests in Istanbul and across Turkey.

RTUK says they investigated “the complaints received for our coverage of the Gezi Park protests” and made a decision for the closure.

We believe this closure is part of the overall repression on the media in Turkey during the more than two-week-long Gezi Park protests. Four other TV channels have been given a fine by RTUK because of their coverage of the recent events.

RTUK sent a letter to TURKSAT to put an end to Hayat TV broadcast at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, 14th June 2013.

We believe this arbitrary and unlawful decision should be reversed.

We call on all democratically minded people to show solidarity with Hayat TV.

Mustafa Kara

Hayat TV Broadcast Coordinator

Selma Gurkan: Gezi resistance needs to grow

emep-taksimLabour Party (EMEP) Leader Selma Gürkan stated that the resistance started at Gezi Park widened to become an opposition to AKP government policies. Regarding the Prime Minister’s stance she said, “This is not simply insistence on the Barracks. The PM knows that if he takes a back step now others will follow”. Gürkan answered our questions, stating that widening of the resistance is the immediate responsibility of all labour and democratic forces.

What are your thoughts on the people’s movement started by the defence of trees in Gezi Park?

The will and resistance shown by the people to the fluctuating intervention and attacks have not developed overnight. It is a manifestation of the reaction built up by the policies of the government that victimises its own population. It is a reflex against political attacks.

The movement seems to be against the PM. The masses walk to the PM’s office rather than the Parliament. The slogans calling for the PM to resign are the most common...

The reason is the PM’s stance and his statements; aggressive, separatist and provocative. Hence the PM is the visible face of the government’s policies and the target of the protests. In both in his speeches in Tunisia and on his return to Istanbul, as well as his public addresses in Mersin, Adana and Ankara; his mildest definition of the protesters has been looters, plunderers, scoundrels... Since the beginning, he has used similar language against all that has opposed or resisted him. Such as telling the farmers to “take your mum and go”, branding the protests of citizens as “ideological, agitation”, etc. Now he is using definitions against the Gezi Resistance that are untrue. The public has witnessed the dose of violence displayed by the police and their civil companions brandishing sticks. Of course any movement that is just about vandalising cannot be accepted and will damage itself. But what shell the public do faced with gas bombs, police panzers and plastic bullets. They rightfully resist. We are talking about advertising boards and stops that people use as shields being targeted in attacks. These unprovoked attacks are the reason for this resistance to be so popular among the public.

As well as “agitation by outside influences” the PM is also talking internally about the interest lobby, Ergenekon and those favouring a coup. Is there any truth in this?

History is repeating. They are a repeat of government lies I used to hear in my childhood. If we need to draw attention to any agitation it should be the mindset that blocks the eyes, ears and hearts of the public, which oppresses them, gasses, bludgeons and kills them. If an interest lobby exists then the government should look at its own financial relations. It is not the Gezi protesters that exchange money with international financial institutions. To see this movement as an attempted coup is utter carelessness. The PM thinks that his portrayal as the victim of a coup will increase his political reputation. On the contrary it is well known that to bring into line the public, the opposition, the media, the judiciary, the universities, etc. Erdoğan uses tactics that differ not much from a coup. These classic methods to discredit the people’s just resistance do not work anymore.

The PM’s stance was tough before going to Tunisia. The expectation of a softening in his stance on his return was also futile. There was a very strong intervention in Taksim on 11 June.

Yes, he does constantly mention his determination to rebuild the Topçu Barracks but this is not an insistence on the barracks. The PM knows that if he takes a step back now others will follow. This is the emphasis of all of his politics. As a result a reckless attack has been staged on 11 June under the pretext of ensuring security in Taksim.

The level of participation among the youth surprised everyone. Youth in central and women in local actions have been prominent. What has brought them to the fore?

The government policies mostly affect youth and women. The youth, due to its character, do not give in to the traditional; do not appreciate intervention on their lives. They are fed up of the changes in the education system, problems in further education and universities, unemployment and uncertain futures, and women of intervention in their lives, violence and poverty.

What about the Gezi protests spreading to 70 cities around the country?

What we said for the youth and women could be widened to all sections of the society. Everyone is going out on the streets in line with their own local issues. The government’s policies affect all sections of society adversely.

What would the influence of the current period of negotiations and ceasefire be on Gezi resistance or the impact of Gezi on the peace process?

We can definitely talk about a mutual positive affect. The ceasefire of the last five months weakened racist, chauvinist influences and supported the rise of this movement. On the other hand, the Gezi protests have also exposed the public’s yearning and demand for democracy, rights and freedoms. We can confidently say that nothing will be the same again. During the peace process, it was said of the Kurdish struggle that it is a point of no return; the genie is out of the bottle. We could now say the same about the desire and energy shown by the public on the streets in fighting for rights and freedoms. Governments need to realise that you cannot govern without recognising the will of the public.

Along with the call for constraint - aimed mainly at the protesters - by TÜRK-İŞ (Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions), TZOB (Turkish Chambers of Agriculture), TOBB (The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey), Hak-İş and Memur-Sen (Pro-government trade union confederations), weren’t the other unions late in their reaction?

A call for constraint among the public after their sufferings from attacks, injuries, deaths and violence will not find a response. The calls for restraint must be addressed at the government, the Department for Internal Affairs, governors and the police. It should also be noted that the support from opposing unions within TMMOB (The Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects), TTB (Turkish Medical Association) and DİSK (Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey) and some opposition unions in Türk-İş to the initial strike decision by KESK and the strike and street protests, taking place in the early stages of the protests is important and meaningful, regardless of their weakness. But this unity has not been developed further. Local platforms, committees and unions must be set up immediately for unity of power.

What kind of lessons should be learnt from the struggle by the unionists and advanced workers and labourers?

Unions should quickly advance the organisation for unity among workers and public workers to develop class unity. Organisation should not be limited to this; all sections of the public involved in the struggle, mukhtars, neighbourhood associations, community centres, religious centres, etc. that defended their rights and freedoms in the streets and neighbourhoods should develop and strengthen their own organisation. To develop this struggle and turn it into a real people’s opposition, spread the struggle for democracy in the country, to create the widest unity of equality, democracy and peace movements; these are the immediate tasks facing labour, peace and democracy organisations as well as our party.

The reaction to Erdoğan’s statement of “I’m hardly keeping the 50% at home” has led him to point at the elections in seven months time and took decisions for big rallies in major cities. What does this mean?

This has never been seen in history. The government has the opportunity to communicate with the population at any time they want. Everything he says is in all forms of media. He had thrown the same threat at students protesting against exam irregularities. He is now organising rallies that will put people against each other. The AKP government-calling people out for these rallies are a call to arms. Furthermore, he is abusing the power of his office, blackmailing public sector workers to welcome him in the streets, and abusing public utilities such as using public transport vehicles. Where is the equality, justice democracy in this? Kenan Evren had staged rallies like this after 12 September to make the public feel the force and effect of the coup. You are the government in office, how are these different from the rallies of a coup?

Even if the PM got 70% of the votes, does this justify oppression of the other 30%?

We have to look at this 50% issue from different perspectives. Firstly, what reality does it represent? Once the system, election threshold, non-voting has been taken into account his share drops to 49.5%. Hence it is not clear to what degree he represents the public’s desires. Let us assume he got 50%, even 90% of the votes. Does this mean the government can do what it wants? Let’s look at AKP’s election manifesto. Did he go to the public saying “We’ll fix minimum wage at the hunger threshold? Increase the price of petrol, electricity and water. We’ll ban alcohol and cigarettes. We’ll evict you from your houses through ‘urban transformation’. We’ll open mines that will poison your lands and water and ruin the environment with new dams. We’ll reduce your children’s opportunity for employment through our work policies. You’ll pay extra for education and health services. Vote for these policies?” What has been promised and exercised is different. At what stage of these implementations is the public consulted? He is talking about a 50% as if he kept his promises. Second issue is the lie that the minority is ruling the majority. Gezi protestors aren’t complaining about this or that aspect of the majority. Besides, he is talking about majority and minority according to what criteria? What is important is that the rights of the majority and the minority are secured. He is trying to split society into them and us, but the Gezi protesters are giving his politics the best response with variety and colour.

Could the Gezi demands be seen as democratic demands? How can a link between those and other be established?

They are the most democratic demands. What is not democratic is the PM’s stance, policies, and government. A call to “Give up on building the Topçu Barracks, demolishing the AKM, and building a third bridge” means give up on all policies such as building dams, power plants, urban transformation and privatisation of forests and protect your history, nature and environment.

The investigation, removal and prosecution of the governors, police chiefs and secretaries of state responsible for the attacks is a call to the government to not wave a stick in the faces of its citizens, investigate those that do and not use chemicals on your own people.

Furthermore, photos of the police officer that killed Ethem Sarısülük in Ankara had been shared in social media for days and finally shown by national media. The irresponsible actions and hostility of this officer, who jumped in among the workers and just shot the young worker, cannot be accepted. Internal Affairs and police should immediately hand this individual over to the law.

To demand the release of those in custody means; you cannot investigate, prosecute and imprison people just because they are against the dominant policies and critical of them, you should review these policies. The demand to open squares to the people means remove any barriers against the public’s rights to gather, demonstrate, march and those against media and freedom of speech, make open spaces available to the masses.

Formulized for equality, solidarity and freedom, the Gezi protests summarise the country’s need for more democracy. It represents the demands for justice and freedom by all sections of the society; equality between Turkish and Kurdish, solidarity among all minorities whether Laz, Caucasian, Arab and Armenians and equality between all beliefs whether Alevi, Sunni, Christian, Assyrian.

Turkey: Police entered Taksim Square

Police entered Taksim Square

11st June 2013

emepRiot police have taken partial control of Taksim Square after entering the site around 7.30 a.m. today and surrounded the Atatürk Statue following use of tear gas and pressurized water on the protesters. It was the first time the police entered the square since they retreated from the venue on June 1.

The police removed the banners and flags hanging on the AKM cultural center and the Atatürk statue. Only a Turkish flag and an Atatürk poster remained on the AKM.

Police forces have also removed the barricades that had been built by protesters on the streets entering the Taksim area.

AT LEAST TWO INJURED

At least two people have been wounded in the clashes. One of the injured was unconscious, possibly passed out. A group of protesters attempted to build a buffer zone between the police and the clashing crowds to prevent either side from violence. An unidentified protester threw a Molotov cocktail at the buffer zone, however, a large number of protesters at the site claimed the Molotov-throwing protester was in fact an undercover cop.

Similar claims of undercover policemen inciting violence disguised as protesters have been surfacing all morning, with social media posts heavily accusing the government of attempting to delegitimize the protests.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS WERE ON THE SQUARE FOR FREEDOM

Hundreds of thousands of people flooded Taksim Square on Sunday, in response to the call of Taksim Solidarity, leading the 15 days old resistance in Gezi Park. Workers, supporters of life, artists, intellectuals, the religious, Turks, Kurds, Alevis, Armenians, socialists, women, men, LGBTs, youth, children, elderly, all sections of the population in opposition came to Taksim Square.

In response to the police attacks in Ankara, slogans of “Resist Ankara, Taksim is with you” were chanted during the rally. Cries of “resisting” followed the name of each town where protests were held. “Only slept for five hours in days. Subjected to pepper gas numerous times! They ask me whether I will save the country. Even if cannot save it, we’ll die trying”; the last post on social media by Abdullah Cömert - killed in a police attack - was also read to the rally.

The agreed statement read to the rally by architect Mücella Yapıcı said, “Not every word of the Prime Minister will be law. As the people who have managed this, we realise that we’ll stop those policies that serve the few that are driven by financial greed, that are anti-labour, anti-democratic, against arts and science”.

DEMANDS OF TAKSIM SOLIDARITY

These are the clear demands expressed by Taksim Solidarity:

- That Gezi Park stays as a park. That an official statement guaranteeing no planned development - whether called Topçu Kışlası or not - will be built on the park site is released and that the planned demolition o the Atatürk Kültür Merkezi (AKM) is cancelled

- That all those responsible, starting with Taksim Gezi park, for preventing people’s democratic right to protest, that ordered the violent crack-down, that enforced and carried these orders, caused thousands of casualties and two fatalities are removed; primarily the Governors and Chief Constables in Istanbul, Ankara and Hatay

- That the use of pepper gas and the like are banned

- That all citizens taken into custody across the country are released immediately and given a guarantee that they will not be prosecuted

- That all squares – primarily the May-Day arenas of Taksim and Kızılay squares - and public spaces are again opened to meetings, rallies and activities and any barriers on freedom of speech are removed

ERDOĞAN HAS BRANDED THOSE ON THE STREETS ‘TERRORİSTS’

Prime Minister Erdoğan held rallies in Adana, Mersin and Ankara while hundreds of thousands were calling for the government’s resignation in Taksim. Erdoğan said “the interest lobby should sort itself out. This lobby has exploited my people’s hard work. They won’t be able to do it anymore. We have been patient. I’m talking to those banks and others that keep this lobby alive. You’ll pay heavily for starting this struggle against us. Those who shamelessly try to make the stock exchange collapse, Tayyip Erdoğan have no money in the stock market. Only you will be ruined. We never gave speculators a chance, and we won’t again. If we find you speculating we’ll throttle you. You will not be able to exploit this country any more. Those days are gone”.

ERDOĞAN DEFENDED THE POLICE VIOLENCE

Erdoğan also talked about the police violence that killed two and caused five thousand casualties. He defended the police thus: “This is the police of the people; they are from among the people. They struggle for order and safety among the people. Were we supposed to abandon the squares to anarchists? What are they fighting for? The police are fighting to defend us”.

Long Live International Solidarity with the Struggle of the People of Turkey!

In the recent week, the world has witnessed the formation of a wide-spread and massive movement against the policies of the ruling party “Justice and Development Party – AKP” in Turkey. Though the media of the “democratic” countries tried to stop the world-spread of the news about the development of events in Turkey but the power of the movement and the mass reporting of the events by the people on the scenes broke the silence of the imperialist media. The reports showed the brutality of the repressive forces who rule in Turkey. They also showed the world the fast growth, the spread, and the demands of the movement.

The recent and unprecedented movement in Turkey has roots in the economical and political situations in the country. Despite the deceitful propaganda about the “sharp economic growth” in Turkey, poverty and unemployment and hunger and inflation are threatening the lives of the public. It is a public knowledge that 30 percent of the society lives under the government-set poverty line and that inflation runs more than 11 percent a year. The neo-liberal policies of the “Justice and Development” Party represented by the Prime Minister Erdogan in the past 10 years, the privatization of many branches of economy, the increasing export of financial capital to turkey by the imperialist powers in order to plunder and to gain new and hi-profitable markets, … all have put tremendous pressure on the livelihood of the people. On the other hand, the political dependency of Turkish power on the imperialists, the NATO membership, the political alliance with the racist and criminal Israeli regimes, the delivery of supplies and financial aids and mobilization of the medieval forces against Syria, the suppression of political freedoms, the imposition of reactionary laws in the direction of Islamization of the society, attacks on the secular laws, blowing the horn of revival of Ottoman Empire in the Middle East, …. have turned Turkey into a barrel of gasoline. Demolition of Gizi Park in Istanbul and cutting its trees to build a shopping mall was the spark to the barrel that caused the explosion of the anger and hatred of the Turkish people against the political power that defends the existing conditions.

The Party of Labour of Iran (Toufan) supports the brave struggle of the workers, Women, youth, nurses, medical doctors, writers, and intellectuals in Turkey against the government of Erdogan and calls on fraternal Parties and Organizations, the revolutionary and progressive forces , and the freedom loving individuals to express solidarity with the people if Turkey.

Long Live the Solidarity between the People of Iran and Turkey!

Down with the Imperialist-dependent Ruling Power in Turkey!

EMEP: About the developments in Turkey

How can anyone interpret the ongoing widespread massive demonstrations launched on previous week? The Turkish Spring? A public upheaval? Or a coup attempt ignited by the nationalists?

To make a realistic interpretation, one must consider the latest political incidents in Turkey. Definitely, it is not just one spark which glinted the fire.

AKP Government, the most loyal ally of US and Western Imperialism in Middle East ,an important actor of the Greater Middle East Initiative and the most devoted executor of Neo-liberal politics;and its policies were found extensive protests for years.

The policies such as disposal of public property to multinational institutions and to local tycoons, massive dismissals, the reorganization of the working life  against workers outsourcing, union-busting, restriction of social rights, lower wages, increased exploitation of labor in the name of increasing performance evoked insurgency everyday in factories and institutions.

On the other hand, the ignorance and the assimilative policies on Kurdish people, massive detentions caused tremendous repercussions .

The urbanite bourgeoisie were disturbed by the religious based practices and the statements of the AKP Government.Implementation of compulsory religious education in secondary schools,re-arrangement of the education system  according to religious references requested, the increase in the number of religious schools, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, which employs a huge army of clerics to arbitration, restrictions for  the sale of alcoholic beverages and smoking, replenish of the  bureaucratic cadre by the religious sections called the pro-AKP.

AKP, by creating high interest rates and selling the public domain to foreign capital at very low rates, provided a flow of hot money and tried to attract the share capital which refrain from investing their money in the Middle East or in the Western banks and companies. So that the AKP government was more successfull so far as Europe and US in slurring over the wolrd economic crises.

But,lately, the hot money money flow from abroad has been decreased.AKP government tried to avoid the economical predicament  by implementing a construction campaign so called “Urban transformation”.The most valuable areas in big cities were expropriated,multi-storey  structures builded on public domains and sold for extreme prices.Growing traffic problem, destroying of green spaces and the prejudiced policies in  which AKP followers filled their pockets, lead to a widespread discontent.

The Syrian policy of AKP government unplugged a great dissatisfaction amongst people. The monetary aid supporting the radical islamic organisations and groups and deploying these groups on Syria border caused lots of issues. The radical islamists became a menacing power for the Alawite majority on the border.harboring the radical islamists impaired the trade and the economy in the area.

The bankruptcies and the unemployment has increased.Besides, the negative effects of 5 million dollars spent on Esad opposers has become to emerge.

In these circumstances, Prime minister Erdoğan announced that a Shopping mall would be builded in Taksim Park. The Shopping mall would be constructed as a caserne. Artillery Barracks during the bourgeois revolution in 1908,known as the headquarters of reactionary forces, and the center of the uprising AKP,resuscitating the barracks,is advocating the March 31, 1908 reactionary uprising and also wanted to take revenge of the 1908 Revolution. Barracks project revealed as such for a substantial portion of the population. In addition, Taksim environmental sectors also disturbed about the fact that almost no green space would be left in the shopping center. Erdoğan’s intention to change the city landscape without the consent of such majority, led the way to an uprising to his dictator-like policies.

Taksim Gezi Park, resistance began.Business machines, taking action to demolish Taksim Park attracted thousands of people to Taksim Gezi Park. Late at night, after the main mass had left the park, the police forces attacked a small group sleeping in tents. The tents were burned by the police, the activists were beaten and exposed to pepper gas.

A month ago, on May 1st demonstration in Taksim AKP government banned a distance of twenty miles from the entrance to thwart  and  mass transport to the zone is stopped, they cut off the access to the city's Asian and European parts the whole day, and the masses were subjected to attack, gas and water cannons. The precautions taken by the AKP government has aggrieved all the people in İstanbul and the tourists.

Now, again, the same method is used  to terminate  the action in Gezi Park. This latest attack, exasperated  a very wide range of masses and tens of thousands of people departed to Taksim. When the working hours ended, the number of  the masses accumulated in Taksim reached one hundred thousand. Dense gas and water cannons used in  the police attack.Despite the censorship promoted by the bourgeois media,by the efforts of social media and a few revolutionary and democratic organ the events  has  been transferred to the public. Actions spread to Ankara and Izmir. People not leave the streets until dawn.In İzmir, Ankara and İstanbul the clashes between the police and the activists had become tough.Baricades have been built.During the clashes, some youngsters have died in Ankara, İstanbul and Hatay.Tens of thousands of people have been injured and been arrested. Our Party’s youth branch administrator in Ankara have also been injured and arrested.

Most of the protesters were composed of youngsters and women. The football team supporters also participated the demonstrations by putting off the challenges between them. The most used slogans of the actions were “Resignate Government” and “Resignate Tayyip”. The masses participated to the demonstrations were often unorganized.

Our party, all revolutionary and democratic parties, greens, environmentalists, chambers of physicians, engineers and architects rooms, public sector workers' unions, the Alawite, intellectuals and artists, lawyers, nationalist groups all composed the secular sections which agree that the AKP government was slowly building a religious law system.

Our Party, participating the demonstrations with all its cadre and organizations, tried to attract the labour, proletarian and the unions to the action. Fasten on the formation of  the administrative instruments of the actions and to refine the targets.

Summoned for the Kurdish problem 's democratic and populist solution, abolition of restrictions on freedom of press, expression and association, the rights of the  Alewite, for return of usurped rights of the working class and laborers, removal of the election  threshold, to determine and  punish those responsible for the massacres as Roboski and Reyhanlı, providing the police from gas-spraying of demonstrators, for the prohibition of dismissal of cities, prohibition of  destruction of green spaces for rent by looting and an end to logging. Called for general strike and resistance.

Summoned to the people to organize and struggle.Today, Public Laborer Union (KESK) and Revolutionary  Labourer Unions Confederation are installing a general strike. The events in Turkey this week, has similar and different aspects from the processes experienced in Tunisia, Egypt or other Arabian countries. The similarities are; wide masses saying” This is enough” and invading the streets and the  resolution for struggle. The differences are the organisational level for the masses and the demands. For the last five years, similar actions took place not only in Arabian countries or in Turkey, also in European countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain,France and England; and in some Latin American countries.Common ground for all is masses rebelling against the repression and the  exploitation of capitalism.

It is clear that the people revolting against the ruling class for their own rights and freedom will be strengthen by the international solidarity and the unity.

EMEP: Three dilemmas of Turkey in Syria problem

It is being alleged that CIA and MOSSAD agents swarmed in tent camps that house Syrian refugees, There are also news that the camps where Syrian soldiers and police -who reportedly go to Syria for protests and come back- are staying a “beaten track” for the CIA and MOSSAD. On the other hand, it is known that these various groups referred as the “Syrian opposition” negotiate publicly with Turkish officials “out of the blue”, especially with Davutoğlu. It is also said that these refugees in tent camps don’t stop fighting with each other about ethnic and sectarian issues. It is obviously visible that they are bothered by Turkish management style in the camps.

Even though the Syrian regime is weakening; Turkey faced with an adverse situation rather than getting closer to its targets.

In short, “Turkey’s Syrian problem” is getting bigger. Though, this is not a result of Assad regime’s gaining strength but Turkey’s contribution to drag Syria into terror, weakening Assad’s authority. This is because the weakened regime has withdrawn its soldiers from some regions. For instance, the Assad regime seems to have abandoned 3-4 km cordon surrounding the Syrian-Turkey border to the “opponents” temporarily. Yet, this abandonment also unveiled the characteristics of the so-called opposition groups. Consequently it is now understood that these unclarified opposition groups are another pro-sharia groups in the same line with Al Qaeda or the Taleban. This means, Turkey is sharing borders with Al Qaeda. Their first accomplishment was plundering and burning Turkish tracks!

This is not the only problem. A balkanised Syria is a scenario being discussed. Besides, there are numerous comments indicating that, Western imperialists and Israel would not suffer but be pleased to see a divided Syria. Of course, these comments are not very objective. As a matter of fact, handing administration of six cities in north Syria to the Kurds, and Assad’s withdrawal to the West Syria, Damascus-Latakia cordon indicates this scenario could become a reality in the long term if not in short term.

However, it is pretty obvious that this is a nightmare scenario for Turkey. A divided Syria would drag important border towns of Turkey into a chaotic position, cities such as Hatay, Adana and Mersin, with nearly 2 million Nusayri Arab minorities. Thus, the most crucial condition for AKP government would be the emergence of Kurdistan in northern Syria.

Of course, the right of the Syrian Kurds to self-determination shouldn’t be a business of the Turkish government. However, AKP government have come to a pretty pass with Syria because of its known habit of “importing regime” to the neighbouring countries. It won’t be a surprise if AKP would have serious conflicts with Syrian Kurds because of its interference to the Kurdish government and we already see the signs of this. Shortly, today Turkey is confronting with three impasses: pro-sharia Al Qeada and Taleban in its borders, Arab-Nusayri reactions on Hatay-Mersin line, and finally, possible self-determination orientation of Syrian Kurds. This is the final situation of Turkish foreign policy that was conducted by Erdoğan –Davutoğlu, and finding a way out of this labyrinth won’t be so easy. Above all, given that Russian insistence on the region’s politics will maintain even after a possible overthrow of the Syrian regime, Turkish foreign policy has become completely open to any kind of crisis and provocation.

As emerging three grand issues have been indicating themselves even before a Syrian disintegration, Turkey’s unrealistic foreign policy will be more obvious along with the potential foreign interference in the region.

EMEP: Turkish planes killed 36 civilians

36 civilians have been killed by the bombardment of Turkish F-16 warplanes in Ortasu (Roboski) of Uludere district of Şırnak last night.

Among 50 people whose ages range between 15 and 30, 36 have been confirmed dead so far. 15 others are reported missing.

Relatives of victims are trying to find the scattered parts of bodies in the area. The bodies are reported to be completely burnt and unrecognizable. Four bodies were brought to the Şırnak State Hospital, while peasants took many charred bodies to the Ortasu village atop tractors and mules. According to the villagers, the bodies were charred as their diesel drums exploded, while some were left under the rubble of a big rock under which they took shelter.
Fehmi Yaman, the mayor of Uludere said: “We have 30 corpses, all of them are burned. The state knew that these people were smuggling in the region."

The killing of 36 civilians in an air raid in the southeastern province of Şırnak is an "unfortunate operational accident,” ruling Justice and Development Party deputy chairman Hüseyin Celik said.

General President of the Labour Party (EMEP) Selma Gurkan called Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and General Staff to resign. She added: “This crime can not be legitimised by any reason or cause. The main responsible of this attack to the people are the government and the General Staff. Committers and soldiers must be on trial immediately and give the account of this brutality.”

EMEP: AKP government has broken a record: 29 journalists were arrested in one day

There is no other example of such a thing, before neither in Turkey nor in the world: 29 journalists were arrested in one day. The number of the detained journalists has raised to 96...

49 journalists and media workers, most of which work for the Kurdish press, were arrested on 20th December in the context of nation-wide so-called KCK (Koma Civaken Kurdistan- Union of Communities in Kurdistan) operation.

There have been 36 detained people in total (29 journalists, 7 media workers) in one day by the decision of Istanbul specially authorized 9th high criminal court.

This is an obvious massive injustice against the journalists.

It is obvious that we confront the most massive injustice to journalists during the history of the Turkish Republic, if we exclude the period of 12th September coup just because we do not have any sufficient statistical information. Further more there is no other example of 29 journalists being arrested in just one day in the world.

The AKP government has broken a record.

Just now there are 96 journalists detained, including the 29 journalists being arrested on 24th December 2011. 17 of them are concessionaires and responsible editors. Thanks to AKP, Turkey is the leading country in terms of the amplitude of detained journalists. The AKP government has already converted Turkey into a big prison full of journalists. Turkey has already broken its own record on the numbers of detained journalist by the last detentions.

The main reasons for coming to this point are the Anti-Terror Law (TMY), which social opposition forces call Anti-Social Law, Courts-Martial, State Security Courts (DGM) and specially authorized high criminal courts, which are the favourites of AKP.

It is time to promote the solidarity with the detained journalists, revolutionary, socialist press, especially the Kurdish press. Freedom of press, freedom of thought and expression and the defenders of human rights are now facing another struggle.

Anti-Terror Law (TMY) must be annulled, specially authorized high criminal courts (OYM) must be abolished, the detained journalists must be released.

Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block gained a victory at general elections

General elections on 12th June, created a picture, full of big problems. This picture shows that, coming days will not be easy for the ruling party, AKP, and other system parties.

The real factor, which increased the votes of AKP was not the support of the people to the AKP policies but dissolving at the rightist parties and taking their votes to the AKP. AKP became the center for the conservative-right. Contrary, AKP suffered a big defeat at the Kurdish region.
CHP (social democratic party), did not inspire confidence to the people as an alternative; “new CHP” and “K?l?cdaroglu wind” had finished before it started. CHP took 26 percent of the votes and gained 135 seats but immediately became a party with internal problems.

By taking almost 50 percent of the votes and gaining 326 seats; AKP seems to be successful at fooling the people but it’s difficult to say that upcoming days will be good for our people. Also, we do not need to be a fortuneteller to say that hard days waiting AKP.

This is because, Turkey became such a country with many problems on economy, foreign policy, Kurdish question, pressure and discrimination over the minorities, women issue, environmental problems, education and health system, unemployment and so on. Current deficit, internal and external debts, increasing at taxes, prices and inflation show that AKP government will steal one piece of people’s bread everyday.
Also, AKP government, which played a democracy game by patching the Coup Constitution with a referendum, could not put rising Kurdish movement and labourers’ struggle off with vague promises.
We, Labour Party, had an approach to consider taking democratic steps for workers and labourers, Kurds, Turks and all peoples in Turkey. Since the beginning, we have been insisted on uniting all powers struggling for labour, peace, democracy and freedom to form an alternative against AKP and other system parties. As a result of this work, we participated the elections with independent candidates under the flag of Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block. The political party of the Kurdish movement in Turkey (BDP) and we (Labour Party) were the main powers of this block. Also there were 16 parties and organisations in this Block.

Ex-president of the Labour Party, Abdullah Levent Tuzel was the independent candidate of the Block from Istanbul, the biggest city of Turkey. There were almost 60 independent candidates especially at the Kurdish region of Turkey and some western cities like Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara (the capital), Mersin and Adana, etc.

And more than 40 cities, we participated elections as the Labour Party (EMEP). And at these cities, members of the block supported EMEP as the party of the Block.

Finally, despite all anti-democratic election laws, 10 percent threshold, arrestings, shootings (2 Kurdish child and a retired teacher killed by police during election campaign period) the real winner of the elections is Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block. Our ex-president Abdullah Levent Tuzel elected as MP from Istanbul with 143 thousand votes. Totally, with 36 MP, this Block showed that it is a public movement. Also, with 11 women MP, Block showed a different approach from other parties. With candidates from all nationalities (Turkish, Kurdish, Syriac) and all sects, this Block became the real opposition force of the struggle for the democratic constitution and Democratic Turkey.

All labour, democracy and progressive forces in Turkey should analyse the results of this election carefully and unite their power in this Block.

Selma Gurkan

EMEP: About the upcoming elections in Turkey

In 12th June, there will be general elections in Turkey. Because of the 10 percent threshold we participated the elections with independent candidates under the flag of Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block. The political party of the Kurdish movement in Turkey (BDP) and the Labour Party (EMEP) are the main powers of this block. Also there are 16 parties and organisations in this Block.
Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block has presented its elections manifesto, as follows;

DEMOCRATIC SOLUTION AND PEACE AT THE KURDISH PROBLEM

The Kurdish question, where no one demands a choice except a democratic, peaceful solution, must definitely be solved within this period. It is now not a promise but a task to review the past by consulting our consciences and to stop the blood still poured because of the Kurdish problem.
When people are so disposed and hopeful about peace, we will not let the war begin again for AKP's (ruling party) votes and interests. We will take initiative for a lasting peace and we will display the two faces of the AKP, which on one hand feeds from conflicts and on the other hand declares everyone except itself as warmongering.
None of us has any endurance left for a war to last 30 years more, for a single life to be lost, for the wealth to be lost. The power in particular, all circles must set their political and economical rents aside and display a will of solution with an intimate approach for the constitution of a lasting peace that the Turkish society has longed for many years; the demands and expectations of the Kurdish people must be taken into account and the three-year old talks in Imralı must urgently be turned into a negotiation process. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), just like all the powers that insist on the impossibility of a solution and subject the Turkish society to war, conflict, pain and tear for economic rents rather than people’s living together in peace and brotherhood, will be forced by us to pay the price before history. We will introduce the solution with our own power and determination and without hoping for help from the power for the solution.

ECONOMY

Central, regional and local mechanisms will be created to provide the supervision and participation of producers, consumers and employees outside of the government in the economy management through professional groups and civil society organisations;
For the development of industrialisation, agriculture, animal husbandry, science and technology on the basis of political and economic democracy in accordance with the society’s general interests, the targets will be the participation of the society in the economic life through cooperatives and modern democratic aggregate enterprises where employees also take part in return for their labour;
Development projects will be created with the participation of Local and Regional Authorities and Civil Society Organizations, Regional Development Centers will be established to eliminate regional disparities with certain intense investments, a Central Development Fund will be established to be transferred to the depressed areas.

EQUAL AND FREE SOCIAL SECURITY FOR ALL

Low-income families will be supported by social benefits; the homeless will be taken under protection and security,
Street children and orphans have substance dependence and live under poor conditions likely for all kinds of abuses. Our alliance will establish centers for these children where they will be provided with accommodation, education, guidance and health care,
People with old-age and disease cases requiring special care will be included in the social insurance,
An effective fight will be given against illegal employment; disincentives will be applied for the inclusion of all employees within social security.

CONSTITUTION

We will all together issue the new constitution which doesn’t impose any ideology and describe the nation and citizenship on an ethnical basis, restricts the powers of the state, predicated on individual-collective rights, sides with labour, a gender libertarian constitute that shows the same respect to the nature and the human being and protects all separate cultures, beliefs, values of Turkey.

DEMOCRATIC AUTONOMY

We regard the Democratic Autonomy, which means democratic self-government, as the reinforcement of the qualifications appropriate to the democratic republic.
A radical reform must be made in the political and administrative structure for the actualisation of the Democratic Autonomy, which will be the assurance of democratic union and the model of direct and participatory democracy, not of division and deterioration as asserted. Besides the official language Turkish, regions will use other second and third languages (like Kurdish) according to their specific needs.

SUPPORTS FOR THE BLOCK

Independent candidates of Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block have been supported by hundreds of intellectuals, academicians, writers, singers, producers, actress, and journalists. Many NGOs, workers confederations and trade unions also announced their support for the block’s candidates.
Also, former Palestinian guerrilla commander Leyla Khaled came to Mersin to support Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block candidate Ertugrul Kurkcu. Addressing the crowd on the feast organized by the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Mersin Branch, the long time activist Khaled said; "We share the same struggle. If I am here with you today is because I see your struggle as my struggle. We will be witnessing the joy of the victory on June 12."

OUR PRESIDENT IS AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE

The ex-president of the Labour Party, Abdullah Levent Tuzel is participating to the elections as an independent candidate of this Block from Istanbul, the biggest city of Turkey. He used to resign from the presidency of EMEP in order to be an independent candidate. Tuzel was an independent candidate from Izmir in the 2007 parliamentary elections but was not elected. There are almost 60 independent candidates especially at the Kurdish region of Turkey and some western cities like Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara (the capital), Mersin and Adana, etc.
At other cities, more than 40 cities, we participate to the elections as Labour Party (EMEP). And at these cities, members of the block will support EMEP as roof party of the Block.

Turkish State chose war, instead of peace

Constitutional court has banned the Democratic Society Party (DTP) and once more showed that, Turkey has an anti-democratic law system and political management mentality.
This decision about DTP, as having links to “terror and violence”, gave rise to terror and violence in Turkey. Turkish State chose war, instead of peace with Kurdish people.
Levent TüzelThe dominant power, which backs this decision, is the alliance of AKP government with nationalist CHP-MHP opposition. This reactionary alliance could not be patient of the existence of DTP as the representative of democracy forces in the Parliament.
With this decision, Turkey had been thrown into chaos amongst “democracy, initiative and solution” words.
The labourers of Turkey will carry on the democracy, equality and will of living together to the future, with their own power and they will protect the peace and fraternity.
Levent Tuzel

AKP Government throws Turkey into darkness

The possible closure of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), would create a chaotic environment that replaces dialogue with clashes.
Labour Party (EMEP), Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP) and the People’s Houses (HE) held a press conference on Thursday to support the embattled DTP.
EMEP head Levent Tüzel said Monday’s attack in Tokat, which killed seven soldiers, seems to be the work of actors who want to trigger violent incidents in relation to the Kurdish problem. Tüzel said the time and location of the attack increase the possibility of it being part of a conspiracy, adding, “However, that does not reduce the AKP’s responsibility” to manage the current tense atmosphere throughout the country.
“The DTP is a bridge between communities, just as [DTP co-leader] Ahmet Türk said. If the party is closed down, there will be no representative of the Kurdish people in the political sphere and the country will slide into chaos,” said ÖDP head Alper Ta?.
“If you try to solve the Kurdish question without Kurds or without giving them rights, then it cannot be called a democratic solution,” said ?lknur Birol, head of the People’s Houses, speaking about the current court case to shut down the DTP.
The three organisations accused the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), of not taking serious steps in granting rights and freedoms to Kurdish people in Turkey.
“It turned out that the recent ‘initiative’ of the AKP is far from solving the current problems,” Birol said Thursday.
Three organisations said; AKP is employing a chauvinist discourse on the Kurdish issue, just like the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).
“The understanding that sees the Kurdish problem as a ‘terror problem’ does not bring peace,” Birol said in reference to the AKP’s recent attitude about the Kurdish question.
Street clashes between security forces and members of the DTP, along with the recent attack on soldiers in the northern province of Tokat, are signals showing that some forces want Turkey to slide into chaos, the leftist leaders said.

Turkey: Public servants were on strike for the right to strike

2 million public workers were on strike on 25th November. And tens of thousands of people took to the streets in major cities all over Turkey to take part in warning strike by the public workers who urge for the right to strike and for collective agreements. The public servants were supported by trade associations, workers' unions and some parties like our Party, EMEP. The strike was co-organised by Public Workers' Unions Federation (KESK) and Turkish Public Union (Turk Kamu-Sen). Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DISK), Turkey Labour Unions Confederation (Turk-IS), the Turkish Physicians Association (TTB) and the Turkish Pharmacists Association were among the supporting organisations.
Co-organiser of the strike KESK President Sami Evren warned the government, in his speech in front of thousands of people on Beyaz?t Square in the old town of Istanbul. “If you do not grant these rights to us, we will expand the strike” Evren warned the government.
KESK President Evren recalled that they proposed the government a collective labour agreement board as a solution for “collective bargaining” on 15 August: “The prime minister ran away from the board. He wanted to receive our decisions in a collective bargaining board. We refused that”. Evren emphasized the need for sitting down at a collective labour agreement table on equal terms in order to properly defend the workers' rights and interests.
According to Turkish labour law, public servants are not entitled for collective bargaining and public servants unions are not granted the right for strike. Even though Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan proclaimed the strike illegal, a large number of employees participated.
Kamu-Sen President Bircan Aky?ld?z, speaking at several places across Ankara, noted that this strike was not being formed “for fun” and that the strike was organized to obtain “political power.” Highlighting that this protest would bring justice and more rights to public workers, Aky?ld?z stated that “those who think that civil servants sit idle and aren't productive will see today our importance.”
“Threats by authorities and other unions will not distract us from our path. These threats are trying to silence us and tell us that these problems will be solved at the bargaining table. We’ve waited for the administration for seven years to sit with us at that table and told them to uphold their promises… All of the civil servants waiting for a serious answer from the powers that be now realize that there won’t be one, and this is why we are here today,” stated Aky?ld?z.
Turkish Transportation Union President Nazmi Guzel, who spoke to strikers at the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) 2nd General Directorate, stated that all trains would stop at midnight on Tuesday night, noting that trains would not be running throughout Wednesday. Except for four members of the union who were taken in for questioning, Guzel noted that the strikes had been mostly trouble-free.
Guzel noted that besides the strikes by railway workers, workers in ports had also stopped loading and unloading ships and that there weren’t enough workers at runways to continue operations. “We warned 200 airlines about the strike, and also warned passengers. There aren’t enough workers at runways to accept landing planes. This is incredibly risky if administrators decide to let planes land, and we will not accept any responsibility if anything happens,” he said. Speaking on railway workers, Guzel noted that “there aren’t enough conductors to run trains, and if they are run, then we will not be responsible for any accidents that may come about from this risky manoeuvre.”
Train passengers left stranded
In a strike starting on Tuesday at midnight, railroad workers refused to work, leaving thousands of passengers stranded with little alternatives. Train stations in Ankara, Istanbul, Gaziantep, Sakarya, Eskisehir and other provinces in Anatolia were frozen as trains waited at the stations, with conductors refusing to run trains. Some passengers were forced to use inner-city buses to travel within the cities, and others used coach busses after waiting for hours in stations without any word from the administration about when trains would start moving again.
Istanbul on strike
In Istanbul, railway services were partially out of service, as well as the mail delivery service and several hospitals that would only accept emergencies. Besides, some school and university students closed down for the day.
Approximately 10,000 people gathered in front of the Capa Faculty of Medicine on Istanbul's European side, shouting slogans like "We demand the right to collective agreements", "Forbid dismissals", "Work for the unemployed" and "free education and health service". "We don't want to be unemployed graduates" was heard from high school and university students. Another crowd had come together at Sirkeci station at the entrance of the Golden Horn. Both groups met on Beyazit Square later on.
Ankara: Police force against striking workers
In Ankara, the police stepped in against the workers on strike. The police violently intervened against a strike group that had gathered on Ankara's popular Ziya Gökalp Avenue.
Since the morning the rail service in Turkey's capital was down. The railroad workers had posted placards at their work places. 2 hospitals limited their service to running the emergency rooms only. Workers in the health sector gathered at the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine Hospital.
Press conferences and demonstrations were held in more than 40 cities including big cities as well as Anatolia, which had not seen a demonstration for a long time. The placard “On strike!” was hung in many workplaces.
